UPH’s Student Athlete Achieves Women’s Singles Champion Title in National Sports Competition LIMA.

In the national sports competition Liga Mahasiswa (LIMA), a student-athlete of UPH Eagles competing under the badminton category won the title of Women’s Singles Champion. The finals, held on 2 April 2019, was a heated match between UPH Eagles’ and STKIP Pasundan’s students. With the resulting points of 21-19 and 21-13, the winner was UPH Eagles’ very own Vioni Florencya. This proud achievement was once earned before by Florencya when she achieved second place at the regional level.

Florencya is not only a brilliant student-athlete; She is also a responsible student academically. A recipient of a full-tuition scholarship studying Communications, Florencya juggles her academic and non-academic activities, such as being an active member of UPH’s broadcasting clubs: UPH TV and UPH Radio. Florencya has her responsibilities as a student-athlete and as a UPH student, yet she manages to handle both of them effectively, as shown by her current GPA of 3.71 and her title in badminton.

Florencya stated that as a part of the millennials, she realized that we have such a big potential in academics and in non-academics. She said, “Both can be done equally, even more so because we are more productive in our age.”

However, this is not an easy thing to do. Therefore, Florencya has her own strategy in order to manage her time, making her consistent in her academic and non-academic achievements. According to her time management strategy, putting priorities on activities is her main strategy. To be able to judge which activities are more important and to be able to work hard in each activity are the challenging aspects to her strategy; As Florencya recalled, she struggled with these challenges when she was preparing for the LIMA Nationals.

“Before going on the nationals, I must go through the regionals first. However, I could not continue the match because of my hand and foot injuries. I am still grateful that I was able to achieve second place. After that, I prepared myself for the nationals. During the preparation stage, I needed to focus on healing my injuries, as well as preparing for my midterms, therefore I was unable to train intensively as I planned. In the end, at the nationals competition, I successfully faced opponents from four universities in the span of two weeks,” Florencya recalled.

Florencya admitted that UPH intervened in order to help her. Not fighting on her own, Florencya received help from the university; Even members of the UPH Eagles commented on how UPH always supports the academic and non-academic preparations that a student-athlete goes through.

“UPH gives the best facilities. The UPH Sports Department also supervises each of our training and needs in preparation for competitions, ranging from accommodation, transportation, and physiotherapy in order to keep the student-athletes’ bodies in their best conditions. Not only that, but I am also supported by the faculties and by the study programs because they understand me when I ask for permission or tolerance when handing in my assignments. I am grateful to be in UPH, even more so because I have a chance with my scholarship.”

With this experience, it is much more clear that UPH completes its students in a holistic way. Florencya is not only grateful to gain experience in sports but also grateful for the knowledge imparted on her Communications studies because it helps her in communicating accurately with others. She added that as a college student, she sees her education as something very important.

As quoted from Florencya, “Education is very important, especially at the university level. At the university, I have not only received knowledge. The millennial generation wants to get everything the easy way. The things we experience at the university really help me to become an active member of the millennial generation. To become one, we must learn how to act under pressure, learn from decisive people, learn how to build good relationships with others, as well as learn how to be responsible.”

In the future, Florencya is keen to be consistent in her activities and to be disciplined in her studies and in badminton.
