The Language Center (LC) at Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) provides language instruction courses and other services for UPH students, UPH staff members, and the general public in the local community and beyond. With a staff of experienced and highly qualified instructors, who specialize in language teaching and learning, UPH LC proudly offers effective, innovative language courses to equip individuals to meet the challenges and demands of communicating in a complex and globalized world.

English programs 1. General English This course aims to improve all areas of language skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing with reinforcement of vocabulary and grammatical knowledge. A communicative approach will be employed to make sure that participants can use English effectively in various settings. This course is offered on four levels: elementary, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. 2. English Conversation This course stresses improvement in oral English proficiency through speaking and listening practice. It also offers effective communication strategies for successful cross-culture communication. This course is offered on four levels: elementary, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. 3. Business English This course emphasizes development in all areas of language skills, such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing to enable participants to use English confidently and effectively in various settings for business purposes. This course is offered on four levels: elementary, intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced. 4. Business English Conversation This course improves oral language skills as well as increases communication strategies in using English in common situations for business and in other professional environments. This course is offered on four levels: elementary, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. 5. IBT TOEFL /Paper-Based TOEFL/IELTS Preparation The program prepares those who plan to take foreign language proficiency tests such as IBT TOEFL, Paper-Based TOEFL, IELTS. This program is designed to improve foreign language proficiency in reading, listening, writing, and speaking as well as the strategies for test taking. 6. In-house English Programs for companies This program is tailored to the specific needs of companies that desire to improve their employees’ English language proficiency specifically for their duties and responsibilities in the work place. 7. BUSINESS ENGLISH CAMP (3D2N – Special Program) The best way to learn English is through an intensive immersion experience. Each participant will learn business English in order to communicate effectively and confidently in business and social settings. This short course helps the participants to communicate better when socializing, discussing their duties or responsibilities, and when conducting business calls, meetings, presentations, and negotiations in English.

Indonesian Programs 1. BIPA 1 This introductory course offers participants basic competence in the Indonesian language, so they can actively engage in a conversation in their daily activities at home, at the market, at school, or at work. Participants explore a variety of everyday topics and simple language functions such as greetings, names, introductions, and learn other essential words and phrases. This course covers basic sentence patterns and productive 1,000 word-levels and receptive 2,000 word-levels with some simple reading and writing of short paragraphs, notices, schedules, advertisements, notes, and personal letters. 2. BIPA 2 This intermediate class allows participants to gain competence in the Indonesian language, both spoken and written, so that they can take part in simple conversations and discussions on common topics and compose simple speeches using complex language functions, such as giving reasons, apologizing, complaining, making suggestions or recommendations, arguing, convincing people, and persuading people. Participants learn simple and more complex sentence patterns and productive 2,000 and receptive 3,000 word-levels to build competence in reading semi authentic news and articles from newspapers and magazines and to write simple descriptive and narrative compositions. 3. BIPA 3 This upper-intermediate course prepares participants to use the Indonesian language, both spoken and written, so that they can engage in normal conversations, and discussions on common or specialized topics using more complex language functions such as defending ideas, arguing, convincing and persuading people to change their opinions, using a combination of simple and complex sentence patterns and productive 3,000 and receptive 4,000 word-levels. Participants gain competence in reading extensive and authentic news and articles from newspapers and magazines and in writing expository essays such as cause-effect, comparison-contrast, and classification. 4. Customized BIPA This Indonesian program is tailored to the requests of individuals, and schools or business employees who need to learn and improve their Indonesian language skills for various tasks or assignments. TOEFL Prediction Test Institutional TOEFL is used to predict how individuals will perform on International TOEFL exams. Translation Service This service offers translation of various texts including legal documents from English to Indonesian or Indonesian to English.
