Two of UPH Architecture students had successfully come in 1st place during an International Architectural Design Competition themed ‘Urban Housing’ which was held by the Architecture Student Association of UK Petra on March 1-2, 2017 in Surabaya.

These two students were Ingvania (Architecture 2013) and Daniel (Architecture 2013), brought a project with the theme Garden Living Space, a concept where home is used as garden and vice versa. This work was created within less than a month until it was presented in front of the panelists, and was finally chosen as the best project among all participants.

The team from UPH had to compete with approximately 150 other works from various universities from Indonesia and foreign countries such as NUS, Universitas Parahyangan, UGM, Universitas Petra, Universitas Diponegoro, Universitas Tarumanegara, Universitas Indonesia and many more.

For Ingvanida and Daniel, this achievement was an exhilarating experience.

“Being able to present our design ideas in English in front of the panelists, who were International Architecture Professionals such as Yu Sing (Studio Akanoma) and Architectural experts such as Prof. Heng Chye Kiang (National University of Singapore) and Prof. Ir. Lilianny Sigit Arifin, M.Sc., Ph.D (Universitas Kristen Petra Surabaya), has become an entirely new experience for us and it surely gave us a new challenge,” said the two students.

This achievement was warmly welcomed by Ferry Gunawan, Deputy Chair School of Design, Architecture Department UPH, and he hopes that through this achievement, other students would be encouraged to have to courage in creating designs with creative concepts.

“I was very proud of our students, who had the initiative to join this competition and the courage to challenge themselves in a bigger range of competition. In the future, I hope that students could become more tenacious and courageous in producing new ideas and concepts. These kinds of competitions are a great place for students to show potentials and produce daring design ideas and concepts,” said Ferry.

In this competition, the organizer subsidized the procurement of 3D Printing and Laser-Cutting machine, in order to make the mock-up for the competition. On the other side, to enhance their students’ achievement and competency, UPH Architecture has kept been renewing its infrastructure, SOP, curriculum and pedagogy, with the hopes that its students could use and practice their concept design, design analysis and design synthesis skill in all of the project studios, which have been prepared for learning purposes, and also through joining competitions like this.  (rh)
