Service Learning
Service Learning is essentially a form of experiential learning where students integrate community service with the structured learning taking place in the classroom to enrich their learning of the course material. Service Learning is more than just volunteering, it provides a level of critical thinking, not obtained through regular volunteering.
Service-learning has many potential benefits to everyone involved: students, faculty, and the community. Through community involvement, students gain an understanding of community issues, engage in real-world issues and social problems, intended to help students learn, understand and engage with others, and develop the skills and attitudes to become multicultural community builders in our rapidly changing, diverse world. For the faculty, service learning enriches and enlivens teaching. And for the community partner participating in service learning, it gain additional human resources needed to raise community welfare.
Since the service is academically anchored, it enhances what students are learning in a class and gives them opportunity to actively reflect on what they are learning because of the experience. Service Learning activities and programs are delivered through the connection to specific academic courses and through the service learning community.
Applied Service Learning in Academic Coursework
Service Learning is an important component in several academic course subjects offered by the Faculty of Liberal Arts. The subjects which applied service learning methods include Character Development, Religion, Leadership and Bahasa. The Service Learning team in Student Service is critical in the facilitation needed for the students to successfully complete their projects. Service Learning at UPH has a positive working relationship with several NGO/ foundations both international and national level which are engaged in holistic community development programs.
Some of the activities available to students include teaching underprivileged children, environmental activities, handicraft workshop for mothers in community, and many more.
By applying service learning, student learn how to develop awareness for the environment, solve problems in the community, deal with people and gain experience that will shape their interpersonal skills, works in teams, and contribute to their personal growth. At the same time, they provide valuable services to the communities and are a great blessing to many.
The Service Learning Community
