Composition workshop by internationally acclaimed Scottish composer explores traditional and contemporary methods of creating music

On Wednesday, 19 July Dr. J Simon van der Walt, composer, multi-instrumentalist and lecturer at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland will give a composition workshop at Universitas Pelita Harapan Conservatory of Music (UPH CoM). Admission to the workshop is open for all participants and is free of charge. Music students and lecturers, amateur and professional composers, as well as musicians of all ages are especially encouraged to participate.

 

During the workshop the participants will have a chance to listen the works composed by J Simon van der Walt and UPH CoM composition students. Dr. van der Walt will also introduce composition method called “livecoding” using open source software SuperCollider. Workshop participants will also have a chance to play on traditional Indonesian percussion instruments known as “gamelan”.

 

Dr J Simon van der Walt is Glasgow-based composer and performing artist. Over the course of his career has created a varied and original body of work, ranging from score-based composition to installation, sound art, performance, and devised musiktheatre. His chief current preoccupations are Indonesian gamelan music, livecoding, and the reconstructing of the career of his fictional alter ego Edward ‘Teddy’ Edwards, unsung hero of British light music electronica. He is Head of MMus Programmes at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is a member of gamelan group called “Naga Mas” based in Glasgow and has also written music for gamelan.

 

The composition workshop of Dr. J Simon van der Walt will take place in the Global Campus of Universitas Pelita Harapan (Jl. M. H. Thamrin  Boulevard 1100 Lippo-Karawaci, Tangerang) at D Building, 5th Floor, Room D501, on Wednesday, 19 July, 2017 from 10.00 a.m. till 12.30 p.m.
