Industrial Engineering UPH Encourages High School Students to Develop Analytic Thinking and Problem Solving Skills through ICE.

Nowadays, most people assume that Industrial Engineering is a field that solely focuses on engineering. However, if we look deeper, Industrial Engineering is a field of science that covers a lot of other fields starting from management to psychology, and many more. Sadly, this fact is not known by many people, especially High School students.

As an effort to introduce and to foster High School students’ interest in Industrial Engineering, UPH initiated a number of activities and events. One of them is a competition held by the Industrial Engineering Department of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) through its Industrial Competition Event (ICE) with the theme “Solution Provider”. The event, which was made for High School students and was followed by 29 students from High Schools around Jabodetabek, was held on January 16, 2020, at UPH Lippo Village, Tangerang.

“Aside from maintaining our relationship with High School students, this event also serves as a means for High School students to learn about Industrial Engineering and its real-life application through fun activities and valuable experiences,” said Priskila Christine Rahayu, S. Si., M.T. – Head of UPH Industrial Engineering Department and one of the judges in ICE.

Priskila also adds that analytical thinking and problem solving are two skills that are really suitable for the role of an Industrial Engineer. These two things also become the central message for this year’s ICE which later takes form as a case study competition with an elimination process and a presentation in the end. In addition to that, during the last stage of the competition, participants were required to follow the board games competition, and the point accumulation from all these rounds will determine the winning team.

“The ICE began with an elimination process where students were required to submit an essay on a problem they found in their school and also the solution. In the second round, students would be given one from a total of three topics including fast food, traffic congestion, and public facilities and infrastructure. From these three topics, students were required to present their best solution for the problem. For the last round, students would have to play the tetracle board games, created by an Industrial Engineering student of UPH,” explained Stepahnie Theodora, Head of ICE Committee (Industrial Engineering, 2017).

This competition aims to encourage students’ to reveal their creative ideas upon solving a certain issue. In this competition, students also learnt to deliver their ideas appropriately. The presentation in this competition holds the biggest mark with 70%. Participants of the competition seemed to be very enthusiastic with the winner prize, which consisted of a scholarship to study in UPH, some cash prize, and a certificate.

Hopefully, ICE can facilitate High School students, especially those who has major interest in the Industrial Engineering field, to understand the basic value of Industrial Engineering. Especially with the opportunity that participants had gotten to interact with lecturers and students of Industrial Engineering UPH.

Congratulations to the winners: 1st Winner “Removal Micro Plastic” – Sekolah Pelita Harapan Sentul; 2nd Winner “Solutionist” – Cahaya Bangsa School; and 3rd Winner “Future Revolutionist” – Cahaya Bangsa School.
