Prof. Dr. Sabrina Sihombing Inauguration as UPH Professor of Management.

Prof. Dr. Sabrina Oktaria Sihombing, S.E., M.Bus., Lecturer of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), was inaugurated as Professor of Management Science on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, by the Decree of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemendikbudristek RI) dated October 1, 2021.

Prof. Sabrina delivered a scientific oration titled “The Importance of Values in Sustainable Management,” at the inauguration ceremony. In her presentation, she emphasized the importance of recognizing personal values that may influence individual behavior for sustainable/long-term management.

“Management refers to the personnel who carry out certain tasks in order to achieve the company’s objectives. Therefore, managers must have a thorough understanding of the external and internal factors that can influence human behavior. Personal values are one of the main internal factors thought to be the foundation in influencing a person’s behavior. Personal values, which are then formed, will represent the person’s beliefs, principles, and qualities and will influence the person’s thoughts, feelings, and actions,” Prof. Sabrina explained.

Furthermore, she said that in sustainable management, personal values influence work values. Work values are the things that a person considers to be important and relevant at work. These will have an effect on work commitment, performance, loyalty, and other aspects. Understanding your employees’ work values is critical to motivating them to be committed and productive at work. According to her, understanding personal and work values that are aligned with the company’s values, will benefit the company’s long-term viability.

“Understanding personal values that are consistent with company values will contribute to the company’s long-term viability. The application of sustainable and responsible management in business, government, and society requires the involvement of individuals who can accept responsibility for the sustainability process. Research and literature have shown that individual characteristics, specifically personal values, are key elements in the application,” Prof. Sabrina explained. She hopes that the findings of her research will provide a fresh perspective on the importance of understanding one’s personal values in order to support the company’s long-term viability.

Prof. Dr. Sabrina Oktaria Sihombing’s inauguration as Professor of Management Science at UPH adds to the university’s pride and joy. This also demonstrates UPH’s commitment to continuing to support management education’s scientific development in order to make it more relevant to today’s life situations.
