UPH Faculty of Law to Represent Indonesia in Washington D.C. After Winning the National Round of the 2023 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

The Faculty of Law (FH) at Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) achieved another remarkable feat by winning the national round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition (Philip C. Jessup ILMCC) 2023, held from 4-11 February 2023. The team won not only the national title but also the Best Respondent Memorial and Best Combined Memorials categories.

As a result of their victory, the UPH FH team, comprising Andrew Daniel Djapri, Cloudio Ardelle Hitipeuw, Christelle Clairine Siregar, Caitlynn Nadya Aurelia, and Gerald Adrian Maden Silalahi, will represent Indonesia in the international round scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. from April 8 to 15, 2023.

“We are very grateful to have won this competition for the second year in a row, a first in UPH’s history. This competition taught us the art of legal argumentation, oral advocacy, professionalism, and teamwork. It provided us with practical experience and insight into working as professionals in the real world,” said Andrew.

The Philip C. Jessup ILMCC is the world’s oldest and largest international debate competition, with more than 700 universities from over 100 countries participating. This year’s competition had a record number of participants in the national round, with more than 20 Indonesian universities, including the University of Indonesia (UI), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Airlangga University (UNAIR), and others. The competition involves a simulated dispute between two countries before the International Court of Justice and the United Nations (UN) judiciary.

The cases presented at this year’s competition were drawn from recent events, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and raised the theme of “The Case Concerning the Clarent Belt,” which deals with issues of humanitarian law, unilateral economic sanctions, and the legal consequences of failing to properly dispose of Hazardous and Toxic Material (B3) waste. The cases are drawn on recent events, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. All members of the UPH Jessup team agreed that this success was due to the guidance of their lecturers and the comprehensive curriculum offered at UPH. UPH alumni also provided input, direction, and support to help the team prepare for the competition.

“Our studies at UPH were highly relevant and gave us an advantage in this competition. Our seniors, who had previously participated in this competition, also provided invaluable guidance and support, helping us to enhance our preparation both in terms of knowledge and mentality,” said Andrew.

This year’s Philip C. Jessup national round competition was attended by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Prof. Dr. H.M. Syarifuddin. The Supreme Court Justice also served as one of the judges in the competition.

“Congratulations to the winners. For those who did not win, do not be discouraged. As Colin Powell, the legendary United States General once said: there are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure,” said Prof. Syarifuddin.

Congratulations to the UPH Jessup team! Keep up the good work and give your best in the international rounds! UPH will always support and provide opportunities for students to develop their potential both through activities inside and outside the classroom.
