On March 19th<\/sup> to 23rd<\/sup>, 2018, UPH conducted a weeklong ?Mentoring Week? that boasts a range of engaging activities, including Carnival Game ? Brain Rush, Escape Room ?Candy Crush Game?, and the ?speed eating? competition, which is open for the public.  <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

?Mentoring Week? also serves as the event closing the yearlong 2017\/2018 period mentor organizing board. This event concludes with the ?Exemplary Mentor Award? award night that was held on March 23rd<\/sup>, 2018, in UPH Lippo Village, at Building C, room 402.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

?Exemplary Mentor? is the title given to mentors who prove to be examples to other mentors. This title is given to mentors who fulfill criteria set by the program?s coordinator, the Student Services Division in UPH?s Student Life Department.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mentors are evaluated on five criteria. The first criterion, commitment, is assessed through the quality with which they maintain contact with mentors. The mentor that manages to maintain contact with all his\/her mentees will get the highest possible score. This is known as ?full commitment?. The second category is Competence. Mentors are expected to be able to guide and give feedback to mentees. They also have to understand each of his\/her mentees? characters, and also be problem solvers. The third category is Character. Mentors have to be role models, as shown in their spotless track records. They should also be exemplary leaders. The fourth criterion is Compassion. Mentors should possess a sincere will to care for their mentees and not view them as inferiors. Finally, mentors are evaluated on their discipline, in which mentors are expected to be individuals demonstrating responsibility and punctuality. They should also participate in the Self-D (Self Development) event and make a report on it.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Felix (Civil Engineering, 2014), a Head Mentor in the 2017\/2018 period, states that this award night is an appreciation for the mentors? performance. This year, the event is held for the third time. The evaluation process is conducted by the Chief Mentor choosing 3 mentors from each faculty. Those names are then given to Head Mentors, who will each choose 1 name to represent each faculty ? those who deserve the title of ?Exemplary Mentor?. In total, there will be 9 names bringing home awards.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The Mentoring program will build a committee every year. Felix breaks down the program?s structure for the 2017\/2018 period: 6 Head Mentors, 36 Chief Mentors, and 216 mentors. Head Mentors are responsible for program planning and directly coordinating with the Student Life Department. Chief Mentors are the organizers of the aforementioned programs ? those who are responsible for the programs? success. They also serve as a link between Head Mentors and mentors. Mentors serve as executors of organized programs, as well as people who have direct contact with the mentees.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Felix is keen to see all mentors burning their mentoring spirit after the mentoring program and hopes that their role as mentors continues throughout their study period in UPH, and even beyond that ? he hopes that this mentoring program can prove to be beneficial throughout their whole lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Felix, who had been a mentor himself, testified that he learned a lot through the UPH mentoring program. ?For me, being a mentor is not about whether or not you succeed, but whether or not we are able to be committed in guiding our mentees. This mentoring program is highly important. Imagine new students being exposed to the whole new world of university life and having no clue as to how to be a university student. They came not knowing a lot of people, and this will certainly render them lost. However, through this mentoring program, new students will be assisted and guided when going through university activities, especially in their first year.? Felix also stated that the focus of this mentoring program is not only on academic wellness, but also in the self-development.<\/span> (mt)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
