It is not impossible for a group of High School students to be investigators for a murder case. Through the CSI Workshop held by the Biotechnology Department of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) on January 24, 2017, this was made possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

It is not impossible for High School students to be in a team of investigators for a murder case. Through the CSI Workshop which was held by the Biotechnology Department of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) on January 24, 2017, about twenty of 11th grade Science students from SMA St. Laurensia have gotten the opportunity to experience being in a forensic investigator team for a murder case, designed by the CSI Biotechnology UPH team.<\/p>\n

The CSI or Crime Scene Investigation Workshop, which was held by the Biotechnology Department of UPH along with the Marketing & Admission Department of UPH, was held to provide an opportunity for High School students who are interested in the Biotechnology Department of UPH to experience the professional world which is related to Biotechnology.<\/p>\n

The Biotechnology Department of UPH has been doing this CSI Workshop for a few times already. There were several schools who have participated in the workshop. For St. Laurensia itself, it has been the second time for them to participate in this event. This time, the workshop was designed even more dynamically, because the activities are done in both inside and outside the Lab of Biotechnology Department of UPH, which eventually make it even more exciting and challenging for the participants.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

For this workshop, students were divided into four groups, where they will do a three-steps-investigation. First, they have to identify bloodstains using the Kastle-Meyer test. For this step, they will swab a cotton bud to the evidence (vase, tape container, golf stick, and knife) and use the Kastle-Meyer liquid to see if there is any hint of pink in the cotton bud swab, which indicates blood.  <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Secondly, they will do fingerprint identification using Iodine liquid. For this activity, there are four papers which have been posted with fingerprints using a scotch tape and each paper was placed over a beaker glass which has been filled with Iodine Liquid and heated, in order to show the fingerprint. For the third activity, they were given a mission to search for the perpetrators around UPH. They would have to interview the suspects and asked for their fingerprints to be matched with the previous ones. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

For approximately 2 hours, these students were having a great time and surely, an extraordinary experience. More than just a direct experience, at the end of the event, Dr. Reinhard Pinontoan, as the Head of UPH Biotechnology Department, gave an overview of his department and its scope, which includes four fields: Green Biotechnology, which is related to agricultural-related researches; Red Biotechnology, which is related to blood, human, animals, medicine and forensics; Grey and White Biotechnology, which will relates to the industry and environment; and Blue Biotechnology, which is related to marine life. <\/p>\n

Through this workshop, 6 of these students admitted that they have become more confident in choosing Biotechnology UPH. Many of them are also interested in the Faculty of Medicine, which has a similar field of Biology. While others said that they felt very impressed with this workshop, but is interested with other departments in UPH. (mt)<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
