SERUNI (Seni Rupa Kristen Indonesia<\/em>) Community collaborated with School of Design (SoD) UPH to held a painting exhibition with the theme: ?Ketika Aku?<\/em> at the 1st floor of Building B Gallery, UPH Karawaci, starting from February 6-11, 2017. This exhibition is one SoD?s regular agenda since 2014 and this exhibition was the 8th one.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The theme ?Ketika Aku?<\/em> was chosen specifically to depict the tangled social-political situation, which has been getting worse due to the involvement of religion issues within the contestation of the legitimacy of power; a world where people only wanted to gain materialistic profit and who are full of ignorance towards their victims of greed.  Through its works, SERUNI wanted to speak to many people about the reality where one’s spirituality value is measured by their sensitivity upon responding towards the sufferings happening around their life. Moreover, SERUNI wants to remind people, that the center of everything in our life is Jesus and as we can see from Matthew 25:35, Jesus represent himself as fellow unfortunate people.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Setiyoko Hadi <\/span><\/span>Artist of ?The Golden Child?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/td>\n
  <\/p>\n

One of the artworks in the exhibition was called “The Golden Child”,  which was created by Setioko Hadi.  The artwork portrays the condition of the people in Papua who are living in the middle of ‘Freeport’  gold mine.  The painting has 12 faces of Papua children with coins from various country, along with a woman wearing traditional Papua clothing, with a child in her arms, draw in front of an upside down gold mine. This upside down painting of a gold mine represents the peculiar condition happening there.  The 12 faces of Papua children in the middle of coins from a various country of the world represents the battle between local interest and the interest of money.  While the picture of a woman carrying her child is a symbol of love, which stands out the most in the painting, to illustrate the struggle of the locals in Papua in the front line. Setioko also added a spiritual touch, this painting has the face of 12 Papua children which actually represents 12 disciples of Jesus, while the woman carrying a child represents Mary.  The title ‘Golden Child’  itself has two meanings, the first one, children who are living near the gold line area and second, to remind people that all children in the world, including these children, are God’s golden child.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Aside from explaining his painting, Setioko also shared his view, that any condition in the world, including the political and social ones that Indonesia is currently facing, can be an inspiration for artists to express their thoughts through artworks.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Through these artworks, we want to give a message to many people.  Surely, as artists, we might feel satisfied when our artwork could be understood by people. But we hope for something more than just an under, we hope that our artwork can change their way people view things and we also hope that it gives them enlightenment, so they can be a more sensitive about their surroundings,” said Setioko. <\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from Setioko, Daniel, one of SERUNI?s artists, talked about his painting, ‘His Love is for All’. Through his painting, he depicts pluralism in Indonesia with cultural symbols such as traditional clothing worn by people who are holding hands together, then there’s traditional housing, which was drawn to emphasize the diversity in Indonesia.  <\/span><\/p>\n

“The message from this artwork is pretty simple, it’s about the fading sense of pluralism in Indonesia. The richness of cultural differences in our country have slowly started to be replaced by other interests, which sometimes identify itself in behalf of religion’s name,” Daniel explained. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Through his artwork, Daniel wants to remind people that Indonesia is rich with cultural differences but all in all, Jesus is still the focus of everything and the source of love which unite all people, from all tribes, without any discrimination. Differences are beautiful and it should become the strength which unites Indonesia.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Through 17 artworks in this exhibition, SERUNI hopes that they could contribute to help people engage in a dialogue and to enjoy the reflective meaning of many aspects of life, which has been muffled by the commotion happening in our world. <\/span><\/p>\n

Donny Ibrahim, S.Sn., as an Art Lecturer in SoD UPH, hopes that collaboration between academic community and artists can keep growing so that they can learn from each other. For the students, he also hopes that they could come to a realization that art is not limited to what they could think about it. Instead, art is able to reflect many things, including their faith.
