 As a part of the collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia (Kemenlu) and the International Studies Department of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), on November 4, 2016, UPH had gotten the opportunity to host the Forum of Foreign Policy Studies (FKKLN) with the theme ?Prospects of Free Trade Collaboration with Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) for Indonesia?s International Trade?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

As key speakers for this forum there were Leonard F. Hutabarat, Ph.D., Head of American and European Regions Studies and Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kiki Verico, S.E., MRI, Ph.D., Deputy Head of Research, Economic and Social Research Institution (LPEM) of Universitas Indonesia Jakarta, Director of UPH Center for International Trade and Investment (UPH CITI)Direktur UPH Center for International Trade and Investment (UPH CITI),  as well as Ferry Samuel Jacob, Head of Bilateral Cooperation, Ministry of Commerce.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning, Prof. Aleksius Jemadu, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), hopes that this event could successfully talks about the potentials, opportunities and challenges in identifying the prospect in Free Trading with EAEU. He also said that Indonesia has to be smart and creative in using all potentials and to welcome globalization. <\/span><\/p>\n

  <\/p>\n

Through his explanation, Leonard conveyed an important point: The involvement of Indonesia in EAEU can be a step towards prospective market development.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
\n

?If Indonesia wants to expand its scope through EAEU, then, Indonesia should not be singularly dependent towards Western Europe, but also towards other alternative markets, not just the traditional ones in China or Japan. <\/span>Thus, through this study, we can learn about the benefit of International Free Trade?s prospect, as well as FTA or Free Trade Agreement related matters,? Leonard explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

After that, Kiki Verico, S.E., MRI, Ph.D., said that there are some important things that we have to know about EAEU before we decide to do FTA.<\/span><\/p>\n

?We have to know several things about EAEU; Firstly, EAEU is still progressing and in the future, many concepts will be developed. Thus, when we enter the Union, there will always be a risk because EAEU is still economically unstable. Secondly, free trade concept is a long and hard process. Third, it is also important to know the average income of each country in EAEU. Up until now, EAEU average income has not yet reached 12.000 and with Russia as the highest one with US $9.000,? Kiki explained. <\/span><\/p>\n

Kiki emphasized that in negotiating with EAEU, it is also very important to consider whether the cooperation is able to strengthen Indonesia?s network or not.  <\/span><\/p>\n

The next speaker, Michella Limenti from UPH CITI, was optimistic towards the thought of Russia as a prospective market. She reminded that Indonesia has to really consider whether to keep being ?true-ASEAN? or to start doing bilateral FTA with EAEU. Indeed, Indonesia has already had some direct cooperation with the five countries of EAEU, but it has not been that significant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ferry S. Jacob as the 4th<\/sup> speaker also saw the potential of Russia as a major country in EU to be taken into account. <\/span><\/p>\n

?Although four countries of EU are indeed small countries, the presence of Russia has a really big impact. Russia has become the 29th<\/sup> nation for Indonesia?s export destination and this makes me feel rather optimistic towards the possibility of FTA and EAEU. Nevertheless, Indonesia also has to realize that in doing FTA, we could not obtain benefit in every level. Thus, we have to search for the potential level which can be maximized,? said Ferry.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n
