In the midst of the current era of globalization and liberalization, International Relations Science is needed by Indonesia in both government and private agencies. Answering this need, the Graduate Program launched UPH Master Program in International Relations (MHI) on Saturday, October 10, 2015, on the campus of the Graduate UPH, Plaza Semanggi. Along with the launch of the MHI program held a seminar titled ?<\/span>International Relations Study Contributions in Addressing the Impact of the Global Economic Crisis?<\/span> with speakers Ambassador Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, Ambassador Prof. Makarim Wibisono, Ph.D and Prof. Aleksius Jemadu, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Science (FISIP). The seminar was moderated by Yosef D.M. Djakababa, Ph.D. ? International Relations FISIP UPH lecturer, Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the event Prof. Aleksius who also serves as chairman of the Master of International Relations, convey the purpose of the launch of the MHI program is to produce graduates who have the ability of strategic thinking, also able to take decisions and policies that affect strategic for the nation’s progress. He also hopes that through this seminar, it can help open an insight to the public into the thought of strategic importance for foreign policy both in government and private institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event continued with a seminar by the speakers. The first session was delivered by Ambassador Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, with the theme of ?What is changing from the international world?. Five things that change from the international world according to him: first, the number of countries changed drastically. For example in 1945 the number of United Nation member is 50 countries, now it?s nearly 200 countries, Or four times fold in half a century. It means that the condition of the 21st century?s number of states is not going to grow drastically anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Second, the Western world’s first presence in Indonesia is seen as an attempt to divide, but now even Western countries learn from Indonesia. Even the strategic objectives of Western countries is now to support Indonesia as a whole, and no longer to divide Indonesia, because then the West can avoid the global crisis and on the contrary benefit from investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Third, once the world?s economy is controlled by the West, but now the world?s economy is dominated by emerging country such as Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, etc. These countries are now becoming a phenomenon in the international system. It should become a weapon of Indonesia in international policy, namely how to position and communicate the identity of the nation of Indonesia as an emerging power in the international community.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fourth, once size are seen as a burden. For example, the population of Indonesia are many, vast Indonesian archipelago, once considered a burden. Yet in the present now, it is the size that is considered to be an asset and an important part in the growth of Indonesia as an emerging country.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fifth, in the 21st century, connectivity will be more important than sovereignty. The one that determine the progress and excellence of a country is connectivity.  Connectivity was mostly done by representatives of the government through diplomacy, but now in the development of the Internet, social media and viral news, connectivity may reach up to the villages and reach the outside world. So the issue of connectivity has become essential in international policy. Learning from these changes the perspective and thoughts should be open, Indonesia must have the courage to open up.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second session was delivered by Prof. Makarim Wibisono, with the topic ?International Relations? (HI) contribution to economy?. According to him people view HI as just related to international politics and unrelated to the economic field. But the world has changed. Continuing what has been presented by Dr. Dino, he mentioned three factors that drive changes in the world, namely: regulation of technology, liberalization of world trade, and the integration of the form of the union to the international society. The changes in the situation alter the international system from the bipolar system into a multipolar system.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The bipolar system focuses more on political security, while at the multipolar system, focus to the economy. Due to changes in the system, the world becomes interlinkage and interdependence. So characteristic of international relations have also changed. For example, we talk about the economic crisis; it cannot be resolved without linking political systems, management systems, and socio-cultural system.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

In this context, the parties involved in determining the international regulation has become much more in amount, where there is a state representative, world society, NGO, to the media representatives. So now in negotiation and diplomacy, it must involve many parties. In an effort to anticipate the impact and the challenge of globalization and liberalization there is three ways: to identify the factors that lead to change, creating policy to respond to these changes and implementing the policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

  <\/span>The last session was delivered by Prof. Aleksius, explaining the issue of how Indonesia should respond to the changes that occur so quickly and what kind of Human Resources (HR) that is required to respond to these challenges. To answer these issues, Prof. Aleksius explains the ?Contributions of HI Studies in Designing Governance of Foreign Relations for the sake of Dignity of the Nation?. According to Prof. Aleksius, International Relations Study helps us to understand the variable or domestic determinant and international significance and even critical influence on the achievement of national interests in the midst of globalization and interdependence that is getting stronger.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

In his presentation he explained the best practices from countries like South Korea, Singapore and China. Learning from the third example, build bargaining power in international relations should be started from the political to the economic capabilities of effective engagement. While the evolution of governance foreign relations RI to government of the old order, the new order until the era  of SBY show that reverse pattern of political activism switch to the priorities of economic diplomacy at the present time.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In conjunction with the HI study, Prof Aleksius explained several things that can be contributed to these problems, among others are contributing ideas including a comprehensive and long-term that covers all aspects of interaction with the outside world. HI studies can also provide study and recommend a policy alignment that is needed to tackle international problems, providing critical thinking and objective to the government related to the governance of foreign relations for the sake of national importance.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the presentation and question and answer, the event followed by the launch of the program MHI by the MHI Study Program Chairman, Prof. Aleksius Jemadu, Ph.D. with cutting tumpeng<\/em>. The event was held on October 10, 2015, at the UPH Graduate Campus Plaza Semanggi, at 1.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m., it was attended by students and lecturers of the UPH and other campus including USNI (Satya Negara Indonesia), UNTAG, Kwik Kian Gie University, and UNPAD. There were also participants from professionals and practitioners such as from law firms, the ASEAN Secretariat, FPCI (Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia) and World Vision Indonesia.
