Mengawali semester baru ini, Jurusan Teknik Elektro UPH kembali mengadakan seminar mingguan, dengan mengundang pembicara Dr.Aimi Abass, project leader untuk “Photon management for energy harvesting” di Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.  Dr. Aimi Abass adalah alumni UPH angkatan 2003 yang lulus tahun 2007. Setelah lulus dari UPH, Dr. Abass mendapatkan beasiswa Erasmus Mundus (Action 1) untuk studi Master ke Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) Swedia dan Ghent University, Belgia. Selesai program master, Dr. Abass mendapatkan beasiswa dari Flemish IWT-SBO untuk Ph.D. di Ghent University dalam bidang “Nanostructures for enhancing light-matter interaction” di group riset solar cell dari Ghent University. <\/span><\/div>\n

Pada kuliah tamu yang dihadiri mahasiswa dan dosen Jurusan Teknik Elektro UPH, Dr. Abass memaparkan teknik manipulasi struktur elektromagnetika dengan conformal mapping yang disebut teknik ‘transformation optics’. Transformation optics adalah teknik yang banyak dipakai untuk mendisain metamaterial optical cloaking, yaitu jubah penghilang yang bisa membuat sesuatu tidak terlihat (invisible), seperti yang ditemui di film fiksi Harry Potter.<\/span><\/div>\n

Dalam presentasi ini, Dr. Abass memaparkan bagaimana menggunakan transformation optics untuk membuat LED (light emitting diode) lebih efisien. Karena index bias substrate semikonduktor yang tinggi, cahaya yang dibangkitkan oleh LED pada umumnya hanya 20% yang berhasil keluar ke udara, dan sisanya terperangkap menjadi substrate mode atau waveguide mode dan akhirnya terbuang sebagai panas.<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

Dengan menambah struktur yang didisain dengan tarnsformation optics, bisa diperoleh efisiensi outcoupling yang tinggi. Teknik serupa digunakan untuk membelokkan cahaya pada permukaaan sel solar sehingga menghindari elektroda metal yang reflektif. Akibatnya, efisiensi sel solar bisa naik, sementara permukaan top electrode (finger electrode) bisa lebih lebar dari yang konvensional sehingga memperkecil resistansi seri dan memperbaiki kurva I-V solar cell menuju kurva ideal dengan fill factor yang tinggi.<\/span><\/div>\n

Selain presentasi ilmiah, Dr. Abass juga membagikan peluang S2 di Eropa bagi mahasiswa. Saat ditanya mengenai gap antara kuliah S1 di UPH dengan kuliah master di Eropa, Dr. Abass menceritakan pengalamanannya bahwa knowledge based yang diperoleh di UPH tidaklah berbeda jauh dengan yang diperoleh saat melanjutkan kuliah di Eropa<\/span>. <\/span> Dr. Abass memotivasi adik-adik kelasnya dengan mengatakan “Anda beruntung karena banyak dosen yang bagus di UPH, dengan knowledge based yang tidak berbeda banyak dengan yang di luar negeri. Dengan demikian, anda akan mudah untuk mengikuti saat melanjutkan master di luar negeri”.<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
