With the existence of freedom of expression on this Reform Era, many accuse that the Indonesian press has been out of control, especially by the fast-paced development of social media. <\/span><\/p>\n

The controversy and hurly-burly of the internet sites issue that contain negative content encouraged the Master of Communication Program (MIKom) of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Graduate School to show its concern. This event entitled ?The Issues of Negative Internet Content of Radicalism, Terrorism, and ?SARA? Hatred,? MIKom UPH engaged with several elements in community to discuss openly, critically, and honestly as well as trying to find the best solution. The discussion of the freedom of press in Indonesia was held on 6 June 2015 at 9.30-12.00 AM at the UPH Graduate School, Plaza Semanggi, presented the speakers, such as Ir. Azhar Hasyim, MT, Director of E-Business, Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), Al Araf, S.H., MDM, Director of Impartial Program, Dr. Ade Armando, MA, lecturer of Communication Science Universitas Indonesia<\/em> and UPH who was also the former member of Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), with Prof. Tjipta Lesmana as the expert of Indonesia Political Communication and the Head Department of UPH Master of Communication. Each speaker delivered a different topic to the 45 participants, who are students, academicians in Communication Science, media, non-governmental organizations, and government officials. <\/span><\/p>\n

Quoted from Kominfo?s content, the developing use of internet keeps bringing out the negative contents so government officials are in charge to prevent the access to the content that violates the law, one way is through blockage. Ir Azhar Hasyim said, even though the minority of people said that the blockage is the abuse of freedom of expression, in fact Kominfo has blocked 814.594 internet sites. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, according to Al Araf who presented the topic of ?Freedom of Expression, Press and Hate Speech: Human Rights Perspectives?, the limit of freedom of expression must be set, which fulfills the norms of Human Rights, such as the principle of legality, necessity, and proportionality. ?The rules of Hate Speech must be formed and fixed, in which this issue is already everywhere, so those potentially threaten the human rights and become the hotbed for radicalism of religions, terrorism, and social conflict,? said Al Araf. Besides that, the revision can be done to the KUHP<\/em>, which needs to pay attention to the international law and human rights progress. <\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, Ade Armando presented the topic of ?Hate Speech via Online Media? which was focused on how media on one certain religion constructs the diversity. Ade?s findings on October 2010 indicated the bad journalism where media omitted the key facts unilaterally without any verification and turned up the generalization as well as questioning the source credibility. He took the religious media which is based on the Moslem and Christian beliefs as the example of bad journalism. <\/span><\/p>\n

This event received good feedbacks from the participants by the active interaction where the participants asked questions to the speakers. In addition, this event was completed by the ceremony of Book Donations ?Hate Speech ? A Study of Order in Indonesia and its Comparison with Other Countries?, a book by Impartial Team (The Indonesia Human Rights Monitor) to UPH Library. (el)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
