UPH students again earned another stellar achievement through its Law School in the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition on the international round in Washington DC, USA on 5-11 April 2015, after winning the national round in Indonesia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

UPH students again earned another stellar achievement through its Law School in the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition on the international round in Washington DC, USA on 5-11 April 2015, after winning the national round in Indonesia. UPH Jessup Team comprised of Roselyn Prima Winata (2011), Astrid Desmonda (2011), Sabrina Wirawendra Kusumoprojo (2012), Nadya Mulya (2013), and Bernice Koean (2014). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The team had not only liven up to the tradition of excellence of the previous UPH Jessup teams, but had broken another record when they won the Alona E. Evans Award, First Place in Combined Memorials edging 116 teams from more than 80 countries around the world. UPH Jessup team also ranked Top 7 in the Advanced Rounds after winning all of their preliminary rounds against John Hopkins University (US), Universit? de Strasbourg (France), Waseda University (Japan) and University of Colombo (Sri Lanka).

Such feat was also made possible with the outstanding dedication of their coach Jessica Los Banos, as well as advisors David Smith, Johan Kurnia, Sianti Candra, Dinna Margaretha, and Jonathan Jehuda Abuthan.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is one of the largest moot court competitions in the world that simulates a proceeding before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) with different themes every year. This year’s problem carries the theme of The Case Concerning Secession and Annexation of East Agnostica<\/em> and other international law issues. (el)<\/strong><\/span><\/span>

I am happy to be a part of this team and I am proud to each and everyone on this team. I could not ask for better teammates. This competition itself was the learning process in which we did not only learn about laws, but also understanding how to work with others, knowing ourselves; capabilities, strength and weakness, it’s like a one-year process to find ourselves, our passion and what we can achieve. <\/span><\/div>\n

It has been an extremely challenging but wonderful experience to be part of Jessup. More than the achievements, the preparation for the competition has personally refined me to grow in perseverance, humility, and ultimately, my faith in God. I am also thankful for having four awesome girls to work with and a wondeful set of coach and advisors. The support of many loved ones, close and far, has also been tremendous. <\/span><\/div>\n

The Jessup Moot is a platform that showcases the depth of international law, allowing law students to hone their advocacy skills and to engage with international law experts with illustrious background. Another thing that it does really well, in my opinion, is that it teaches participants the value of perseverance when handling the cutting-edge topics. When we embarked on the journey, all we had in mind was that that the following eight months were going to be challenging, as they were, and we did not expect things to unfold as they did. Thus it’s an indescribable feeling to know that our hard work has paid off, and I owe it all to our dedicated coach and advisors for their unmatched time and knowledge, the support from the university, and to my girls – for their determination, thirst for knowledge, and faith.<\/span>

Jessup moot, for me, has multifaceted merits. First, apart from being an avenue for students to delve into the breadth of international law and studying the works of those who spearhead its development, Jessup allows us to tune ourselves into the very complex issues that the world has to presently face, for instance, Crimea?s secession from Ukraine. Second, as a competition with a global reach, doing well in the international rounds provides us with the opportunity to elate the name of our university and Indonesia in the eyes of another. I am brimming with pride that Indonesia has proven itself a strong contender in Jessup, even capable of besting others in their own turf. Lastly, on a personal level, working together with impressive teammates, coach and advisors for the past eight months has left me deeply humbled and inspired by their dedication, faith and prowess. I can assure you that our achievements are the product of a wonderful teamwork and ultimately, His grace.<\/span><\/div>\n

Having the opportunity to compete at the international rounds of Jessup Moot Court was truly an incomparable experience. In essence, The Jessup Moot Court has exposed us to the relevant issues within the scope of international law, and it has personally changed my perspective, as a first-year law student, towards such issues.<\/span><\/div>\n
