Dalam rangakaian peringatan dies natalis Universitas Pelita Harapan yang ke 20, James T. Riady, selaku pendiri UPH mengadakan pertemuan dengan orang tua pada hari Sabtu, 24 Mei, 2014 di Gedung D 501. Acara ini merupakan acara yang penting untuk memberikan informasi kepada orang tua mengenai pendidikan yang anak-anak mereka terima, sekaligus untuk mengajak peran serta orang tua dalam membimbing anak-anak mereka mencapai titik sukses dalam hidupnya di masa depan.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sebelum sesi dimulai, para orang tua diberikan kesempatan untuk berdiskusi dengan para dosen yang mengajar anak-anak mereka di kelas. Pertemuan berlangsung di ruang yang berbeda sesuai dengan fakultas yang anak-naka mereka ambil. Dalam kesempatan tersebut orang tua mendapat kesempatan untuk menyampaikan pemikiran dan kritiknya tentang UPH. Kebanyakan dari orang tua menanyakan mengenai  program trisemester, yang mana menurut mereka program ini cukup menyita waktu anak untuk belajar.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

?Saya senang melihat anak saya rajin belajar. Namun, saya takut kalau hobby dia bermain band menganggu pelajarannya di kampus,? kata salah satu orang tua di Fakultas Kedokteran yang bercerita kegundahannya kepada Dokter Eka. Menanggapi pertanyaan itu, Dokter Eka menjelaskan betapa pentingnya mempunyai kehidupan sosial. ?Bagus bagi para mahasiswa untuk belajar dengan rajin dan mendapatkan nilai bagus, tapi untuk menjadi dokter diperlukan skills<\/em> yang melebihi itu semua. Menjadi dokter berarti kita mempunyai kemampuan untuk berinteraksi dengan baik, beradaptasi dengan lingkungan secara cepat. Untuk itu, kegiatan di luar akademik tentu akan menambah life skills<\/em> mereka nantinya. UPH memfasilitasi keduanya, studi dan life skills<\/em>. Kadang-kadang para mahasiswa mengadakan sebuah pertunjukkan sebagai alat untuk merefresh otak. Bahkan para dosen pun diajak untuk berpartisipasi. ?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Setelah itu, acara dilanjutkan dengan heart to heart session<\/em> bersama James T. Riady. Ia membawakan topik ?The Next Step? di dalam pertemuan ini. James menekankan pentingnya peran orang tua di dalam pendidikan anak-anaknya. ?Kita sebagai orang tua harus bekerja sama satu sama lain. Penting untuk mempunyai visi yang sama, sehingga kita bisa menjalani bersama. Semua faktor saling berhubungan karena anak-anak kita akan membuat asumsi sendiri tentang kita. Kalau kita sering bertengkar, mereka akan berfikir bertengkar itu baik. Hal ini akan direfleksikan di dalam karakter mereka nantinya,? jelasnya. Ia juga menceritakan pengalamannya dengan orang tuanya dan bagaimana cara orang tuanya mendidik anak-anaknya.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Menurutnya, menjadi pintar itu mudah. Pengetahuan itu bisa didapatkan darimana saja. Ia mengilustrasikannya dengan seorang anak yang diberikan Internet selama setahun. Diam di depan komputer pun, anak itu akan mendapatkan semua informasi. Tapi, ini hanya satu faktor yang membuat seseorang menjadi sukses. Tanpa adanya dasar moral dan kehidupan spiritual yang sehat, karakter seseorang akan berubah-ubah dan mudah dipengaruhi. Mempunyai kepercayaan yang kuat membantu seorang anak untuk berpegang keras kepada prinsip hidupnya dan melakukan hal yang benar. Contoh: di dalam program trisemester ini, para anak-anak akan diuji berdasarkan kemampuan mereka mendisplinkan diri mereka sendiri, dan kesungguhan untuk melakukan yang terbaik.<\/span><\/p>\n

James T. Riady berharap agar pertemuan ini memberikan inspirasi kepada para orang tua untuk membimbing anak-anaknya. Ia bersyukur dengan kesediaan orang tua untuk datang dan memberikan kritik tentang UPH. Untuknya, aspirasi-aspirasi ini sangat berguna agar UPH bisa bertumbuh dan lebih maju, sehingga mampu memberikan dampak kepada komunitas. (pris)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
