Since the reformation of Hong Kong secondary school in 2009, schools are beginning to apply a curriculum where students are encouraged to take their own initiative. Thus, students are taught to think analytically as well as thoroughly. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
This statement is delivered by the Secretary for Education of the Government of Hong Kong, Eddie Ng Hak-Kim, in his visit to UPH on Monday, December 16, 2013. He also added that the education in Hong Kong put each of students? potential as their foremost attention. Besides that, students are given full support from their teacher, including counseling session. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
?Since the reformation of secondary school, curriculum expansion, students are the one that take control of their study. The initiative to study comes from the student theirselves,? said Eddie Ng to SP in Jakarta, today. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The Hong Kong Education delegation, led by Eddie Ng Hak-Kin, visited several high schools and universities in Indonesia from December 14 to December 18, 2013. At UPH, the delegation is welcomed by UPH Rector Jonathan L. Parapak, UPH leaders and deans. The delegation followed the campus tour where they were introduced to UPH education programs such as scholarships, dual degree, and student exchange. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Eddie Ng said that Hong Kong has successfully improved their students? achievement in the Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA) survey. The latest PISA 2012 survey showed that out of 65 states\/districts, Hong Kong is ranked second in reading and Science fields. Meanwhile, for Mathematics, Hong Kong is placed on the third. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The PISA surveyed developed and developing countries that are part of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
?Hong Kong is experiencing a quite good improvement in terms of PISA result. We are now motivating students to study and to read through the current education system. PISA evaluation has now become one of our concerns,? said Eddie Ng. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
According to him, students must be taught to have an open mindset. Eddie Ng also added that Hong Kong Government set a requirement where every teacher has to be officially listed in professional organizations. The quality of teachers must be maintained in top condition. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Regarding to his visit to UPH, Eddie Ng commented that this visit purpose is to strengthen the cooperation as well as exchanging cultural values. Eddie Ng also took 28 students from one of the oldest humanitarian organizations in Hong Kong, Po Leung Kuk (PLK), to visit Indonesia together with him. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
?We want students to learn not only through books or internet media, but also through face-to-face experiences, a direct dialogue with the people,? he said. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Meanwhile, UPH Vice-President Budi Legowo said that Hong Kong chose UPH as one of universities destination in their visit. The reason for this is because UPH is one of renowned international universities.

Budi also added that Hong Kong is beginning to promote the paradigm of Liberal Arts Education ? where students are taught various soft skills ? that will surely be useful for students? future and career prospects. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
?Preparing students with soft skills is very important. In layman?s terms, Liberal Arts is classes that teach general and basic knowledge. However, the current basic knowledge that are being taught to students only focuses on memorizing skills, not analytical skills,? Budi explained. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Besides UPH, the Hong Kong delegation also visited Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Bina Nusantara, SMAN 8 Jakarta, and Sekolah Bina Bangsa. On Monday, December 17, 2013 the delegation is going to meet with the Minister of Education and Culture, Mohammad Nuh.<\/span> <\/span> <\/p>\n
