Jakarta, September 27th 2013 ?<\/strong>Improvements to the country?s infrastructure are sorely, and obviously, in need if we ever expect to realize the potential of a ?rising Indonesia.? Sadly, spending on infrastructure is far from enough, having fallen from 7% of GDP before the 1997 to a mere 3% in 2012. Given the massive amounts of investment required, public funding will not be enough. Indonesia needs to explore other means of attracting private investment to this sector that will quite literally, determine the trajectory of the country?s future. To make sure we stay on track, UPH Busines School have invited four experts and practitioners with extensive experience to outline some of their success stories and challenges we face going forward and to share their reccomendations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The four experts that spoke in this lecture series are: Mr. Ignasius Jonan ? CEO of Kereta Api Indonesia (a state-owned company dealing with train and stations), Mr. Reynaldy Hermansjah ? CFO of Jasa Marga (biggest highway provider in Indonesia), Ms. Sukmawaty Syukur ? Director of PT. Jakarta Monorail (tender?s winner for Monorail in Jakarta), and Ms. Pamela Bracey – PSOD Representatives in Resident Missions for Indonesia. This lecture series moderated by <\/span>Ms. Elvi Nasution – <\/span>Chief Representative at French bank Natixis<\/span><\/strong> and lecturer at UPH?s Business School. The lecture took place in MRCCC Siloam Semanggi 36th floor conference room and attended by around one hundred participants from government officials, embassy, expert, and university students.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Ignasius Jonan started the lecture by sharing his experience in transforming PT. KAI (Kereta Api Indonesia) in the last four year. Highlighting no government expenses on his company, he conjured all non-air conditioning trains into air conditioning trains. His success not only in trains, he also rebuilt the stations into a modern stations by dismissing street vendors and implement electronic ticketing in almost all stations in Indonesia. After Mr. Jonan finished, Ms.Sukmawaty told the story of Jakarta Monorail in winning the tender in 2004 under Sutiyoso?s era. She also expressed difficulties in starting the project since the policy change everytime the governor change, which caused her questioned by many reporters after the lecture.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Later on, Mr. Reynaldi started his session by told us the story of Jasa Marga, which is built in 1978 and financed by G to G obligation until 1987. Since 1987, private sector allowed to take place in building highway together with Jasa Marga. Mr. Reynaldi also expressed challenges that Jasa Marga is facing right now. Land acquisition that can be only done by government is the biggest challenges for Jasa Marga, where in Indonesia, in 10000 square meters land, the owner can be more than 50 people which is force government to negotiate with many people. Summarizing the three speakers, Ms. Pamela Bracey conclude that in developing infrastructure, both public and private role needed in terms of finance, teamwork, and policies.
