On last Saturday (16\/3), taking place at Restaurant UPH, School of Design held a socialization, which was attended by parents from prospective students. The Dean of Faculty of Design and Planning, Prof. Dr. Ir. Manlian A. Ronald, MT, IAI, and the heads of those four departments were also attended the event. The socialization about School of Design was conveyed by Mr. Elia as the Head of School of Design Formator Team.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Elia told about the background why they built School of Design, where the change of network society was one of the reasons. ?Language changes, meaning changes, when I teach something, several years ahead that thing could change. The era changes, so does the generation,? he said. Related to design, design is very connected with space. The methods that used to be effective might be not effective in years ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Through the learning at School of Design, UPH gives the students preparatory to be survive and excellent. Focus of the learning is the pre-understanding, not only giving information, but also acuity. ?Design needs sensitivity, new students have to know why something is said right,? Elia explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the new curriculum, every subject will be taught with interconnection. ?Students will have knowledge not only about ?what?, but also the reason and acuity behind that ?what?, so when the ?what? changes, they still know why it changes,? he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the new curriculum, UPH tries to develop students? uniqueness, where they could mix the subjects from other departments, in example Interior Design students may take photography subject from Visual Communication Design department if they were interested in it. Besides materials about design, students will also learn about liberal arts.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The parents also showed their enthusiasm in this occasion by giving some question about the learning materials in School of Design. One of the questions came from a father, who asked about the technology used in UPH, which he said sophisticated enough. He asked whether the technology would make students leave handwork. Answering that question, David Hutama as the Head of Architecture said that despite the technology had been very sophisticated, our hands were still way better. ?In first year, students are required to draw by hand. Technology is just a tool to make it easier,? he explained. Elia also added that in this School of Design, the lecturers tried to convey the everlasting core, so that students did not only rely on computer?s software.<\/span><\/p>\n
