The Speakers of Seminar “Matah Ati,” Jay Subiakto, Atilah Soeryadjaya, and several representatives from the show with UPH Visual Communication Design students and staffs.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
?A great nation is the one that loves their culture,? said Jay Subiakto, the art director of ?Matah Ati? initiating the seminar held by Visual Communication Design Department, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH). The seminar held on March 22, 2011 discussed ?Matah Ati? that was performed in Esplanade Theater Singapore on October 22-23, 2010.<\/p>\n

In spite of the lack of sponsorship, Atilah Soeryadjaya, producer, director, writer, and costume designer of ?Matah Ati,? is now satisfied for bringing the Indonesian culture to Singapore and performing a successful show that was appreciated by the audiences. The show that has been prepared for two years brought at least 95 dancers and gamelan players from Indonesia. With captivating Javanese dance and breathtaking sets and lighting, ?Matah Ati? was truly a remarkable creation done by the children of the nation.<\/p>\n

Jay Subiakto in this seminar said that we should be proud of our own culture. Indonesia is a great country with flourishing culture that will produce something extraordinaire if well explored. In ?Matah Ati,? Jay Subiakto brought 15-degree-tilted stage from Indonesia. The stage was tilted in order to allow the audiences from the back see the configuration of the dancers. Besides, according to his research, in the original story, the leading role Raden Mas Said conducted numerous wars on the hills. This also became the reason why the stage was tilted; so that it matched the hill contour n the original story.<\/p>\n

On the show, Jay Subiakto used many geometrical symbols that have certain meanings. The symbols were used based on Jay?s research of Indonesian culture. Therefore, Jay suggested to be original and not follow or imitate Western culture because we have flourishing culture.<\/p>\n

In the seminar, the sneak peek of 90-minute show ?Matah Ati? was played. The lead dancers Fajar Satriadi and Rambat Yulianingsih also performed a piece from the show.<\/p>\n

This seminar was especially relevant to Visual Communication Design students, as they will later produce a miniature stage design for the final project. The students were expected to obtain inspiration and knowledge from the professionals. (dee)<\/p>\n
