The competition was organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at Universitas Riau, May 1-2, 2010.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width:745px; height: 294px;\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>&#8220;Last year this kind of competition was held in <st1:place>Yogyakarta<\/st1:place>. UPH teams also participated,but only reached until the semifinals. This year, with more hard work, knowledge, and increasing skills, of course, we can beat teams that are much stronger. In the final round we beat teams from Universitas Padjadjaran,&#8221; said Matthew Hanzel (International Relations class of 2009). They said, besides Universitas Padjadjaran, prospective winning teams were Universitas <st1:country-region><st1:place>Indonesia<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and Universitas Gadjah Mada. <\/p>\n<p> In this time debate competition, the system used was Australation (Austros) Parliament, a combination of Australian and Asian Parliament system. &#8220;The structure was the same. Each speaker was given eight minutes with no interruption, and followed by replied speech,&#8221; explained Olivia Husli Basrin (International Relations class of 2006). The overall time was longer than other systems. <\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-25\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uph.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/images_news_2010_05_uph-unpad-final.jpg\" width=\"339\" height=\"219\" \/><br \/><em><strong>Al-Azhar team (three on the left) and UPH team (three on the right)<br \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Although this competition was in English, it was not an obstacle for them. &#8220;The important thing is the mastery of the material, because if we don?t master the material, at the time of presentation we could stammer. We didn?t have any problems with the language,&#8221; said Jason Robert (International Relations class of 2009).<\/p>\n<table style=\"width:745px; height: 373px;\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<tr style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" valign=\"top\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-26\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uph.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/images_news_2010_05_juara1.jpg\" width=\"464\" height=\"284\" \/> <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>UPH team as the first champion<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" valign=\"top\">\n<p>They prepared themselves for this competition for about a month. &#8220;Every week we met twice for trainings. We brainstormed, arranged arguments, and deepened the humanitarian law ? what it meant, why was it important, what were the applications, and what were the latest examples,&#8221; said Olivia. <\/p>\n<p> On this national level, other universities that participated were Universitas <st1:country-region><st1:place>Indonesia<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, Universitas Al-Azhar, Universitas Parahyangan, Universitas Budi Luhur, Universitas Gadjah Mada, dan Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n<p> UPH International Relations debate team will represent <st1:country-region>Indonesia<\/st1:country-region> in the international level which will be held at <st1:place><st1:city>Kuala Lumpur<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> on June 11-13, 2010.
