The presidential spokeperson, Dino Patti Djalal, stated that concrete change from 100 days of Obama?s presidency was the change of image of the US. The statement was made in a seminar discussing 100 days of Obama?s presidency: Is there Any Change, held at Pelita Harapan University.
According to Djalal, Obama was the first US President who was able to draw symphathy from many countries due to the fact that he once had lived in several countries such as Indonesia and Africa.
The Post Graduate Director of IAIN, Azyumardi Arza, who was also one of the speaker in this seminar, agreed with Djalal. ?The most concrete effect of Obama?s presidency is the subsiding anti-US attitude,? Arza stated.
He stated that Obama was more cosmopolitan, compared with the previous US presidents. ?Obama clearly has experienced living in multi-cultural society,? He said.
These past experiences seem to be reflected in the renewal of Obama?s governmental system. One of Obama?s new approach is what Hillary Clinton, the US Minister of Foreign Affairs, called as ?Smart Diplomacy? whose targets are conflicting countries such as Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
The new diplomacy is in contrast with the strict diplomacy employed in the era of George W. Bush. Arza quoted Clinton?s statement,?America wants to listen more and talk less,? Djalal stated that US? new and more friendly governmental system was an opportunity for Indonesia to rebuild its external relationship with the US. ?Indonesia and the US is currently in the same place, both are facing the same global issues, and are trying to rebuild their external relations,? he stated.
Meanwhile, HE Cameron R. Hume, the US Ambassador for Indonesia, gladly embraces Indonesia?s goodwill to rebuild their relationships. ?As partners, our two countries will seek to promote democracy, tolerance, and peace throughout Southeast Asia and beyond,? he said.
