When many people think that talent might get you anywhere, Aminoto Kosin, a spiritual songs composer, said that talent is not enough. Dream, efforts, commitment, and sacrifice are needed to become successful. He shared his experience and views as one of the distinguished guest speakers at UPH Festival 16.
Being the only son in the family, he was expected to follow his three older sisters? step to become a doctor. However, he realized that he has passion on music. When his sister was given a chance to take a piano course, he also took the opportunity. From that point, he learnt the meaning of commitment in following the course schedule.
When he was about to enter university, he chose to study music and went to the US, where he received many precious lessons.
?I once got a lecturer who taught me to switch between chords only. It was so boring and I had to do that for a semester,? he said only to admit that the lesson later gave him the ability to improve during his performance.
From his experience, he said that there are several keys to be successful. Sacrifice is in his list. He believes that sacrifice in needed to be successful. The sacrifice he mentioned is sacrificing our time and sometimes friendship.
?Our friends might take distance from us because we spend too much time practicing music,? said he.
Practice takes discipline and commitment. It is easy to take a commitment, but it is not easy to live the commitment. There were lots of temptations he encountered during his study, but with discipline and commitment, those temptations would be nothing.
The last tip is to focus on the result. During his study, opportunities to join a music band were determined by a student?s rating. If one wanted to join a better band, he should have a better rating. This drove him to keep on practicing to increase his rating. He warned the students that result can also be the biggest obstacle as many people get satisfied after achieving their dreams.
Another important factor is dream God has for each of us. God created us special, and He surely has a plan for us.
?If you have talent, pray to God and ask whether or not it is your purpose in life,? Kosin said while giving example that some of his friends take other profession after finishing their music schools.
Pursuing his talent and dream, armed with his efforts, commitment, and sacrifice, Aminoto Kosin has become a successful music arranger, composer, and producer in his effort to glorify God. (sar/cyn)
