The career development center is an essential aspect of student growth.

The career development center is an essential aspect of student growth. This center gives students the opportunity to explore the fast-approaching future in the business world by using tools designed to support and help form the most rewarding career path.

Recognizing its importance, Pelita Harapan University presents career development center called Career Development and Alumni Center or better known as the acronym CDAC. The center began in February 1999 from the dream of an American citizen named Curtis E. Loewen, Ph. D. who has struggled in the world of education for 40 years, including 12 years in Indonesia.

In its development, CDAC becomes just like UPH?s strategic partners in preparing UPH students pursuing their careers. Regularly, CDAC held an event called ?Career Starter Kit! Start Your Career Now!? during pre-commencement of each semester, with a series of seminars and workshops fully enhancing career-related topics.

Internship Program
UPH has initiated an internship program that allows qualified students from any major to have opportunities to work 4-6 months and receive 5-6 academic credits toward graduation. This program has been started since 2002 and UPH is the first university in Indonesia to implement an internship program as an option for the students? final assignment.

?This is important so students can apply theory to real-life problems, learns new work attitudes and skills, improve communication, productivity and efficiency of work,? said CDAC Manager Maria Natalia (Tyar).

CDAC also monitor our student interns in every company or institution in which they participate by asking supervisors of intern students to fill a questionnaire to determine the performance of intern students and the possibility to receive more UPH students in the future.

Questionnaires are summarized and concluded and then be given to each department as feedback from the company to the majors, especially for his students. “So far, the company user claims very satisfied with UPH student interns,” said Tyar.

Job Search and Placement
To assist students or graduates in preparation for successful job search and employment, CDAC has a program called job search and placement. Some activities that they do are:
1.?? ?On Campus Recruitment (OCR)
Open for students in final semester, recent graduates, and alumni seeking employment, with opportunities to meet specified company?s representatives.
2.?? ?Workshop/Training
This activity is a class to equip students with adequate knowledge about the real market place.
3.?? ?Job Vacancy Information
Information about job vacancy for full-time or part-time jobs can be found in CDAC information board and mailing list.
4.?? ?Job Search Partnership
CDAC partners with top-notch companies in order to provide and assist the students with first experience of job handling by becoming interns in respective companies.

Alumni Relations and Services
UPH always have a good relationship with the alumni, one way is to facilitate the alumni associations such as UPH Business Club. This aspiring interest group formed in July 2007 as their members come from CEO, directors, business owners, to professionals. The club is starting up coordination with nationwide business organizations such as Himpunan Pengusaha Muda Indonesia (HIPMI).

Another way for CDAC to keep in touch with UPH alumni is to create a mailing list and disseminate the information through the mailing list. “Info that commonly distributed are job vacancies and seminars, but did not shut the possibility if the members want to share their experiences on the mailing lists,” said Tyar.

UPH alumni have also contributed actively in the academic development as in returning back on campus to co-lecture and mentor current students. Opening up opportunities also mean to have job openings for and from alumni. What a way of networking!

UPH CDAC will continue to assist students in forming and developing themselves. “Our commitment is to create graduates with clear career profiles, what are their skills and competencies, so that in accordance with the needs of the company,” Tyar closed.
