Being a distinguished guest in the seminar entitled ?Information Literacy (IL) Training for Trainers? (4/2), Member of Presidential Advisory Council ? Dr. Meutia Hatta, gave a speech. Dr. Meutia mentioned the importance of being skillful in information literacy.
?I see that information literacy should be developed, because there are always new things come up and we are not supposed to be left behind; another thing we should keep in mind is that our past is a part of our present time. Our advancement now is not to erase our past,? explained Meutia, responding to the importance of preserving and maintaining the old books, which might not be of much use anymore nowadays. In the seminar that was held on the 3rd floor of UPH library (The Johannes Oentoro Library), Meutia added that academicians, both in primary and university levels, should have the information awareness, so that they will always be updated. However, the skills on handling new information can not be separated from the help of librarians. ?Librarians should have knowledge of both old and new things in various fields, even though they might have interests of their own,? Meutia said. One important thing from the seminar, according to Meutia, is to help librarians in other areas outside Jakarta, to arrange, compile, maintain, and use the information. Besides that, it is important for librarians particularly and academicians in general, to encourage the reading interests of Indonesian, as well as using internet to get more information.
