Let?s Get Familiar with Applied Mathematics

The reluctance of high school graduates to continue with mathematics major is cause by the ?myth? that mathematics is “frightening”. Although this phenomenon is common, in developed countries math and science have a place in the hearts of students. “For example in the Netherlands, all the talent are appreciated and are not wasted. So since junior high school children are led according to his/her talents. A person will give the best contribution to society if that person works in the field that is in accordance with his/her talents.” said Helena Margaretha, Head of the Applied Mathematics Department University of Pelita Harapan.
The lack of socialization on career field for the mathematics graduates also affect students? interest to further explore the field of mathematics. Whereas the available career field is wide enough, considering that at any form of industry, there are always “numbers” and data involved. Mathematics graduates, especially those who are able to apply their mathematics skills, are actually very flexible.

In Universitas Pelita Harapan, this phenomenon is overcome by focusing on applied mathematics. Even so, basic pure mathematics is taught in the first four semesters. “These two things should be mutually supportive. Our goal is that students have the flexibility in any field that requires certain mathematical sciences. We want to create a bridge between the world of practice and mathematics itself,” said Helena.

From these concerns and the general concerns on identifying talents in science and math, the Student Senate of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics organizes DISCOVERY@UPH on 15-19 March 2010 at UPH. This is an annual science & math competition, with motto “Discerning Science Through Valiance and Integrity”. Participants come from schools in Jakarta, Banten and West Java. This competition covers topics on mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. Winners will get scholarships and a total cash amounting up to Rp. 7.000.000, -. Besides the competition, there will be a talk show on interesting topics in science and math for high school students. “These days we rarely encounter to see such an exact science competition here. We want to bring back the spirit of the lovers of science,” said Giovani Gracianti, one of the committee. The organizing committee consists of Biotechnology students and Applied Mathematics students of UPH. (sar)
