Tuesday (25/2) ? Kompas Publisher together with Gramedia Matraman Bookstore held a launching and review of DR. Eka Julianta Wahjoepramono, SpBS? biography book called ?Tinta Emas di Kanvas Dunia? (Golden Ink on World Canvas). The book that was written by Pitan Daslani tells the journey of DR. Eka?s life as a neurosurgeon who is widely known in the world. The event that was also attended by Jaya Suprana and moderated by Andy F. Noya thoroughly discussed Dr. Eka?s efforts to eventually becomes a guest professor at Harvard University, as well as speakers in many countries.
The doctor who is also Dean of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Pelita Harapan revealed his first time experience when operating a brainstem tumor back in 2001. What is more, the patient that he had saved attended the event and thanked him greatly. ?I?m so grateful for doctor Eka for taking care of me since February 21, 2001 at Siloam Hospital, so that now I am cured from my illness,? said Adriansyah, a Merak resident who was DR. Eka?s first brainstem tumor patient. The experience of operating Adriansyah has opened the door for DR. Eka to be a guest professor in Harvard University. ?If it?s only for ordinary cases, I might not reach overseas today. But Adriansyah?s case has given me international recognition,? he explained proudly. Pitan, as the author of this book, stated that his goal was to inspire others ? especially those who are dreaming to be doctors ? to keep on trying even though the facilities and money might not be good enough. ?This book was purposely written in order to find out how he could be the way he is today. Around 40 years ago DR. Eka sold his mother?s delicacies for school tuition. Today, he is a professor in many universities and he turned down the assumption that lack of fund limits people?s desires,? Pitan explained. Andy told that besides showing DR. Eka?s competencies in medicine, this biography also revealed his sensitivity and integrity. The sensitivity was clearly shown when he cried after one patient ? who often sent him text messages ? could not be saved after an operation, and how he is always willing to help the poor patients. And his integrity is shown through a freedom in doing what he thinks is right, because his ability is not doubted anymore by hospitals, patients, and Indonesian Brain Foundation (Yayasan Otak Indonesia). Jaya Suprana, a patient as well as a friend, commented that DR. Eka?s ability is a big step to escalate Indonesians? pride toward their own country. And Pitan?s initiative to write the biography could really inspire many people. In this opportunity, Jaya Suprana proposed to put DR. Eka?s name in MURI (Indonesian Record Museum) as the first Indonesian doctor who performed a brainstem surgery. One thing that DR. Eka always said to his students and in every seminar is that, if other people can do the impossible things, why can?t we? So, with strong will, perseverance, courage, and diligence, the impossible things would possibly be done. (yun) UPH Media Relations |
