Communication Avenue: News Presenting Competition 2010

Still in the series of Communication Avenue “Expand Your Horizon”, Department of Communication UPH held a ?News Presenting Competition? for the 6th time, which took place in TV Lab on Tuesday (9 / 03). Participants came from various universities in Jabodetabek, among others, the London School of Public Relations, Universitas Trisakti, Institut Bisnis Indonesia, and Universitas Bina Nusantara. Although this competition is in the context of broadcasting, participants didn?t only come from the communication department, but also from other majors such as business, informatics, etc.

According to the jury, most participants already have the basic competencies required to be news anchors.
“The participants are pretty good. I think there are some potential ones, and with a little touch, they could be the next TV anchors in our stations,” said Nisa Hidayati, a lecturer of Commercial TV at UPH, who is also one of the judges. ?The first thing that a news anchor must posses is the knowledge and mastery of the news. This skill is beneficial in order to avoid chaos when improvise reading scripts. Secondly, appearance matters. Neatly dressed up, then make sure the hair does not interrupt gestures, hands are not waving too much,” Nisa continued. A good chemistry with a partner is also important to be noticed by audience besides technical issues, such as intonation and articulation.

Not too much different, according to Nova Riani ? presenter of Liputan 6 SCTV ? being updated with current issues is something essential for a news anchor. However, our appearance on television can?t be neglected. “The challenge is, how to seem communicating intensely with the audience, while actually we?re only speaking to cameras,? said Nova.

Winners of this competition will receive certificates, goodie bags and cash prizes. The judging would be based on audio, facial expression, and also gesture. Winners will be announced at the closing program of Communication Avenue event, Thursday (11 / 3). So, are you ready to become news anchor? Go for it!! (Sar)
