Five years are quite a long journey for UPH choir in pioneering an achievement. Starting from a team consisted of eight students, now they have 80 students from various faculties. Lots of achievements began to be carved, to be successfully launching the debut album entitled “Many Colors Paint the Rainbow”.

As an expression of gratitude as well as promotion of the album, UPH Choir held their premiere concert on Monday (05/04). A total of 20 songs were sung in concert, divided in three sessions. There were seven acapella songs sung in the first session, the second session supporting the theme song with a line of excellent songs entitled Many Colors Paint the Rainbow, and the third session were the Easter songs.

“Music is indeed able to create the tone, but only the human voice can say the lyric. God put His words in the human mouth to be spread through the lyrics of the song,” said Tutu Sukendro, UPH choir conductor, before starting the show. A total of 61 singers and two pianists composed of UPH students from various faculties, appearing with great expression and passion. No wonder if the admiration for the Lord appeared at the sound of praise was sung.

“Yes, very wonderful!” said Nicholas from Singapore Politechnics University. Another spectator, Jeffrey, gave similar comment, “Quite a surprise. I thought those were common songs, gospel songs which were very beautiful. The concert was like a gift from them to God and us.”

The concert was attended by more than 500 spectators from UPH and the public. Also attendances were Jonathan L. Parapak (Rector), Gary A. Miller (UPH Executive Vice Chancellor), Dr. Sheldon C. Nord, (UPH President), Stephen L. Metcalfe (Director of MYC) and representatives of PT Matahari, Heartline Radio, as well as other invitations.

“Five hundred tickets sold out 4 days before the show,” said Ian, the Chairman of UPH Choir Student Activity Unit (Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa/UKM).

The concert was closed with the song “Standing in the Promises of God? that sung in swing style. Boisterous applause when the last song has been sung and the audience seemed did not want to leave because they were asking UPH Choir to repeat three songs. In this concert, UPH Choir also sold their debut album with a special price for Rp 30,000. – “The marketing is still directing amongst themselves or in churches,” added Ian. They expected the debut album will be sold out as well as the concert tickets were sold out.

UPH Choir has several achievements in competitions such as being the second place in Kopertis III Choir Competition in 2007, won the first Popular Choir Competition 2009 in Plaza Semanggi, Jakarta with the Best Performance category, and The Most Favorite Choir, and got the confidence to perform at Graduation, Independence Day, UPH Festival, Gala Concert and servicing in church.

“In our next project we want to perform in national level. One of them is to follow the choir competition in Tomohon, Manado, on August,” added Tutu.

The desire to be known in national and even in international level becomes the next target. That’s one of the reasons behind the launch of the UPH Choir debut album entitled “Many Colors Paint the Rainbow”. A total of 1000 copies are ready to be released. The album is supported by PT Matahari, Heartline FM and Getsemani Record. (dar)
