Awards should be given to anyone who gives a positive contribution to Universitas Pelita Harapan. If the Student Organization Activity (SOA) is busy preparing for UPH Awards 4 conferring night (awards mostly for students), the Academic Affairs has just held Outstanding Faculty Award (OFA) 2010 on Friday (09/04) in building D501.
“Toward Academic Excellence” is the theme of this first time OFA celebration. “This award is meant for outstanding faculty members. Assessment methods that we use are similar with the ones used for ‘Outstanding Faculty Competition’ (Pemilihan Dosen Berprestasi), which is usually held by DIKTI (Directorate General of Higher Education). We are judging the nominees from the work they have produced; originality and contributions to the development of UPH, as well as services to the community,” said Lusiana Idawaty as the chairwoman of OFA 2010. |

Holistic education is UPH?s vision that is continually being highlighted. UPH Rector, Jonathan Parapak, stressed on this in his speech. “Academic excellence is certainly important, but behavior and character are equally important to make a person becomes ‘A Godly Man’,” he said. He also thanked all lecturers who had been promoting UPH all this time, and congratulated the finalists.
There were four finalists OFA 2010, namely Arnold Ariwibowo of Computer Engineering, Manlian Ronald Simanjuntak of Civil Engineering Master Program, Wiryanto Dewobroto of Civil Engineering, and Yongky Safanayong of Visual Communication Design. The four finalists have been going through the selection process of submitting paper or work they’ve ever made, inter-finalists discussions, presentations, and interviews with the jury. |

Later on during the program, Prof. Adrianus Mooy as UPH Senior Advisor announced, “The winner of OFA 2010 is from… Faculty of Design and Planning: Prof. Drs. Yongky Safanayong of Visual Communication Design.” The entire audience exploded in applause as they were admiring the thin figure, with gray-shoulder-length hair.
“What Prof. Yongky has done all this time was in line with UPH?s vision. He is also able to think in an integrated manner from multidiscipline and multicultural points of view,” said Harianto Hardjasaputra (Chairman of Research and Community Services / Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ? LPPM UPH) as the chairman of OFA 2010 jury. |

In his speech, Yongky was very humble. He even thanked all parties who had helped him in making his work successful. “The achievements that I got so far were not because of my personal efforts, but teamwork?s. I myself as an individual is working in an organization, and the relationships I make in it have contributed to my self-development. My greatest gratitude to everyone,” said Yongky. He was considered eligible to receive the award because he is the first Professor of Visual Communication Design in Indonesia. His love for the environment led him to appreciate resources (time, water and other energy sources) even more. Yongky calls it as his philosophy of life. “Positive thinking, commitment, and do everything with love,” he added. |

Yongky ended his speech by inviting his faculty colleagues at UPH to continue working and move forward together. “UPH has a good vision and it is an opportunity for all of us to do something noble. Being noble in our own eyes, for others, and of course for God. I encourage all of my friends to follow my footsteps,” he said. (cyn) Arnold Ariwibowo, Manlian R.
