Over-steer testing
One cause of environmental pollution is the one produced by motor vehicles. Hazardous substances resulted from the vehicles not only causing serious illnesses (lung cancer, asthma, kronika bronchitis), but also contribute 65 to 75% of air pollution in urban areas. Especially in big cities, where a family doesn?t only own 1 vehicle, but can be as many as 6 vehicles!
In order to prevent this situation from getting worse, it is necessary to have cooperation from various parties. One action was taken by the government through Peraturan Pemerintah (Local Regulation) no. 2 ? year 2005, which states that all vehicles must pass the emission test, at least once a year. Violation to this rule could result on imprisonment to a maximum of six months period, and a maximum fine of 50 million Rupiah.
As the series of 2010 Safe Driving Campaign, Executive Student Board – Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH BEM) conducted a vehicle emission test for all UPH community. This testing process begins with the installation of a temperature detector on oil entrance way, and the RPM at the spark plug wires. After the engine temperature reaches 60 degrees Celsius and the engine speed reaches 3,000 rpm, the owner of the vehicle should then install emission detector (probe) in the exhaust of vehicles. Vehicles are considered passing the emissions test when the emission of CO (carbon monoxide) shows the indicator of zero, HC (hydrocarbons) 9, and CO2 (carbon dioxide) 14.9. This process is recommended to be repeated periodically every six months.
Still in the SDC program, UPH in cooperation with Garda Oto were campaigning the motto of being safe on the road through ?Always Drive Safe: The Young and Restless? session in Food Junction, UPH (15/04). The campaign which was specifically designed for students presented Fitra Eri (Garda Oto racer) and Taqwa (Technical Manager – Garda Oto Racing Team). This session discussed the good ? braking techniques, common mistakes by drivers, and technology reviews on cars. UPH students also had the opportunity to test the over-steer with direct instructions from professional instructors. Over-steer is a phenomenon that can occur in an automobile while attempting to corner or while already cornering. The car is said to over-steer when the rear wheels do not track behind the front wheels but instead slide out toward the outside of the turn. Over-steer can throw the car into a spin. The effect is opposite to that of under-steer. The effect is opposite to that of under-steer. “Drive with your eyes, not with your arms, this is the most important thing to be done,” said Eri Fitra.
