Three out of four Civil Engineering teams from UPH Faculty of Design and Planning that joined the XVI UNTAR National Concrete Competition succeeded in bringing home 3 trophies at once. They were the Eagle  team (1st winner), UPH 5 team (2nd winner), and Eagle Art team (1st runner up). Meanwhile, in the 3rd winner was ITS, and Universitas Petra was the 2nd runner up.

?Eventhough 1 group did not make it to the big 5, this is still a proof that Civil Engineering UPH is competent in producing skillful students who can make high quality concrete,? said Wiryanto, one of the lecturers who are guiding the students.

This Concrete Competition held by UNTAR (Universitas Tarumanegara) was just one of the similar competitions usually held by other institutions. However, this competition was a pretigious one, because Civil Engineering UNTAR is one of the favorit of its kind in Indonesia. The XVI Concrete Competition brought up a theme of ?Create your own energy saving concrete?, and held its climax at Universitas Tarumanegara Campus, Jakarta (9/5). This national level competition was followed by 61 teams from 24 universities in Indonesia, divided into several stages from paper writing, demonstration, and presentation. The board of jury are the construction expert in Indonesia,  which was consisted of Dr. FX Supartono;  Dr. Sri Roosyanto; Ir. Hadi Pranata;  and Widodo Kushartono S.Si, M.Si.

Four teams of the Civil Engineering, Faculty of Design & Planning UPH were: Eagle Art team (Elisabeth Jacintha, Stephen Willy dan Kevin Valerian), UPH 5 team (Paramitha Dewi, Luky, Hendy), Eagle Eye team (Yurike, Michael Sutedjo dan Giovanno), and Eagle team (Sherly Mandala Putri, Juroni dan Enrico Pranoto).

Under the guidance of lecturers, among others, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Harianto Hardjasaputra, Dr.-Ing Jack Widjajakusuma, Dr. Ir. Wiryanto Dewobroto, M.T, Ir. David B. Solaiman, Dipl. HE., Joey Tirtawijaya, S.T, and Vincent Hasen, S.T, the 4 UPH teams prepared paper and performed experiments. ?Our Faculty of Design and Planning was very supportive towards us, both morally and materially,? said Stephen Willy, Civil Eng.student of 2008.

Preparations have  been made since February, starting from the preparation of concrete making materials, such as sand, crushed stones, cement, silica fume, fly ash, and superplastisizer. Next, each team did a trial mix by doing experiments in order to get the expected concrete which is good in terms of its strength or ability to flow well. When finally reaching a success in the trial mix, its data then be used in the competition.

?We started making the specimens on April 4. 5, and 6, 2010. Each team has different material compositions, according to its own innovation and creativity. And then, the finalists were required to make the concrete demonstration and performed presentation in front of the board of jury.  It then turned out that 3 UPH teams made it to the big five,? said Willy.
