One cause of the lack of Christian youth involvement in churches of western countries is the widespread of secularism, materialism, rationalism, and the like within society. In the world of education and science, these ideas often ride on concept commonly known as Darwinian evolution. From primary to high school, the concept is continually inserted (often on behalf of science) and thus affects the reliability of knowledge and belief in God and creation, as stated in the Bible. No wonder that in America 60% -80% do not go to church after they finish high school. When they are asked why, most answer that evolutionistic idea taught in school has affected them to consider that there is no God. This leads to generations who feel that life has no purpose at all. These explanations were delivered by David Catchpoole, B.Ag.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D., a creationist plant physiologist (CMI-Australia), at a public seminar at UPH campus on Wednesday, July 7, 2010.

At subconscious level, Darwinian Theory of evolution has impacted people’s lives and also the education world, not the least in Indonesia. “All this time, people hold diverse views regarding evolutionary theory. Some people even consider that it doesn?t apply to those outside biological sciences. Yet if we look, the theory actually affects all of human sciences,” said Inswasti Cahyani, a biology lecturer at Teachers College, who was also involved in organizing the seminar.

Evolutionary ideas which are packaged as “science” often create confusion and ?contradictions? for Christians. David described some examples of scientific interpretation made on fossil findings, dinosaurs, and the age of the earth. He showed the difference when scientific facts were interpreted secularly and biblically. In this seminar, he also introduced the book “Answering Questions about the Creation of the Universe” and the book “Stones and Bones”. Both books were translated into Indonesian specifically to help Indonesian Christians to get the right answers concerning evolution-creation issues, according to the perspective of the Bible.

“This seminar is intended to open the floor for discussing these controversial issues surrounding the creation-evolution. But it also wants to further show that the Bible and true science never contradict each other,” explained Inswasti. “This seminar is important for both staff and students, to be able to integrate their faith and knowledge,” she added.
