The President of Tsinghua University, China ? Prof. Hu Heping ? visited UPH on Thursday, October 14, 2010. Tsinghua delegates were accompanied by Dr. Mochtar Riady and some personnel from Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology (MRIN), and welcomed by UPH?s Executive Vice Chancellor ? Gary A. Miller, and Director of International Relations ? Natalia Fifi Budiman.

This is a second visit after UPH & Tsinghua?s MOU in effect in April 2009. The scope of cooperation covers student exchange, faculty exchange, as well as joint research project and publication. On this visit, other possibilities of cooperation development between the two universities were discussed.

UPH brought up the plan to further develop communication and film study programs, which are now growing rapidly. Miller hopes to establish cooperation with Tsinghua to develop those fields, considering Tsinghua has been running the School of Journalism and Communication which is very much advanced.

Miller explained about the education concept at UPH that applies holistic educations. He assured that UPH students are not only excellent in knowledge, but also posses Godly character. In the effort of forming students? character, they are taught to care for the society through service learning programs. Some activities include giving free medications, training and tutoring for less fortunate community, as well as other social programs.

Another program being brought up was Teachers College, a scholarship teacher education program. Through this program, Yayasan Pendidikan Pelita Harapan (YPPH) is educating future teachers coming from all parts of Indonesia, who will be placed as teachers at Lentera Harapan schools run by YPPH all over Indonesia.

Just like UPH TC program, Tsinghua University also has a similar program. However, the total students is not as many as UPH?s, which is only about 30 ? 40 students per year. The university invites several students from villages to be educated freely at Tsinghua University for a year. Upon finishing their study, they are permitted to go back to their hometowns and teach at schools. This is one form of Tsinghua?s community service.

Both parties agreed to explore further possibilities to work together in the near future. This visit was ended with the giving of UPH?s souvenir, and campus tour to several facilities. (ros)
