UPH Conferred the Honorary Doctorate of Law to H.E. President Benigno S. Aquino III

…the title was given to President Aquino because he had done numerous things that helped progress and welfare in the Philippines.

During the state visit of President of the Philippines, HE. Benigno S. Aquino III, on March 8th – 9th, 2011, the President scheduled to visit UPH on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at 3:00 to 4:00 pm.

On that occasion, Universitas Pelita Harapan gave the Honorary Doctorate of Law degree ? Dr. (HC) ? to the President of the Philippines, H.E. Benigno S. Aquino III. After the honorary ceremony, President Aquino delivered a public lecture to UPH academic community as well as to the guests.

In his speech, the President Aquino explained the importance of democracy, which can provide freedom from oppression and poverty, equal opportunities in all strata of society and prosperity. To implement the democracy, the key, is a transparent and accountable government, he said.

He also asked Indonesian youth to develop democracy and learn from the diversity in the country. The young generation has to work hand in hand to develop democracy in diversity for a better future.

In relation to the conferring of the doctoral degree, UPH Rector ? Dr. (Hon) Jonathan L. Parapak, M.Eng.Sc. ? said that the title was given to President Aquino because he had done numerous things that helped progress and welfare in the Philippines.

In his speech, Parapak said that, during his years of service in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, President Aquino tirelessly strove to improve the lives of Philippine citizens through important legislation that protected workers rights, improved education, strengthened and codified laws, regulated utilities, protected the environment and created regulatory oversight for expenditure of government funds. His Excellency has also focused his attention on drafting bills and resolutions to eliminate corruption and reform Executive power.

The title was awarded in a formal ceremony conducted by the UPH Senate. The attendees included the Minister of National Education ? Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Mohammad Nuh, DEA; the Minister of Youth and Sports ? Andi Malarangeng, Ph.D; UPH founder ? Dr. (HC) James. T Riady;   Dr. (HC) Mochtar Riady; and about 2000 UPH students. (ros)
