Recently, Tomislav Dimov, D.M.A. and Vinsenso Julius Pratama, two members of the Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Conservatory of Music, received awards for their outstanding contributions to the study and performance of music. Tomislav Dimov, coordinator of string instrument, lecturer of violin, and director of the UPH Symphony Orchestra, won an international award for his violin research. His dissertation entitled ?A Short Historical Overview and Comparison of the Pitch Width and Speed rates of the Vibrato Used in Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by Johann Sebastian Bach as Found in Recordings of Famous Violinists of the Twentieth and the Twenty-First Centuries? received the Innovative Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Award on June 20, 2011. The award was given by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, an international consortium of over one hundred universities worldwide, mostly in North America and Europe. Out of hundreds of dissertations considered, Professor Dimov?s work was chosen along with the research of two other finalists from the United States. His analysis, which took ten months to complete, provides a unique and innovative approach to musical performance studies. The project marked the culmination of Dimov?s second doctoral degree earned from West Virginia University. He is grateful for the honor: ?It was really by God?s Grace that the award happened. It?s amazing if you think about the million ways that things can go wrong, but in this one way, it went right. When that one way happened, I was very happy to experience such grace from the Lord.? In the near future, Tom is collaborating with other UPH lecturers for another significant contribution to music: ?The next project is already in the works, and it?s going to be interdisciplinary. My UPH colleagues and I are all excited about this new venture, and the preliminary talks are already in process. Soon, we will create some new, interesting innovation in the field of music,? he explained. In addition, UPH freshman Vinsenso Julius Pratama won the Grand Prize at the Indopos Jakarta Open Piano Competition held at Ciputra World on September 25, 2011. Out of 20 participants in the advanced category from all over Indonesia, Vinsenso took first place. To prepare for this competition joined by hundreds of participants, Vinsenso studied with UPH piano lecturer for two months: ?I?m really grateful, and motivated to study piano more seriously. I plan to join another competition on December 2011. My lecturer really supported me,? Vinsenso stated. Last year, he was awarded third place in the Ananda Sukarlan Award. (dee) UPH Media Relations |
