?What?s the use of having natural resources, if we don?t have the science and technology,? mentioned Minister of Research and Technology Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Gusti Muhammad Hatta, M.S. at National Conference of Communication Science (Konferensi Nasional Ilmu Komunikasi) held at UPH, February 9, 2012. According to him, by improving research and technology, people can increase the product?s price and can gain higher income.

He also said that Indonesia?s competitiveness has improved in the last few years, ranked 44th (from 54th) out of 142 countries. As for innovation, Indonesia is placed 26th. ?However, in terms of technology, we are placed 94th,? he added.

In his speech, he explained that science and technology is the main element of humanitarian and cultural society. ?The science and technology must be improved through innovation. Innovation will help the people and industry,? he explained.

In MP3EI strategy (to improve economic development), the Ministry has the role to improve human resources and science and technology. Therefore, Indonesia is divided into several clusters of innovation improvement. Java will drive the industrial and national service. Kalimantan will be developed as the production center and mineral processing and the barns of national energy.

The minister also supported the national research and innovation. ?I will make a list of those who produce the prototypes. When it?s ready, I will invite the businessman,? he promised.

UPH Rector Jonathan L. Parapak fully supported the nation to actively do research and innovation. ?We tend to glorify western theories, but we forget that Indonesia has the opportunity to develop communication science. If we study western theories, we do not find any theories related to the religion and ethics value. Therefore, we must develop communication patterns that are related to the religion and Pancasila values,? he stated.

After opening the conference, the Minister visited UPH laboratories, The Johannes Oentoro Library, and Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology (MRIN) research area. (dee)
