United Nation Assembly Simulation As Final Test For Diplomacy Course

Tests are not only completely done by sitting in the class room, quietly, and answering the questions on the answer sheet. At UPH, tests are also done by practicing directly or simulation, as done by International Relations major for Diplomacy course. Tests are not only completely done by sitting in the class room, quietly, and answering the questions on the answer sheet. At UPH, tests are also done by practicing directly or simulation, as done by International Relations major for Diplomacy course. The final test was done by holding an assembly simulation just like the United Nation assembly simulation.

The participants of the assembly were International Relations students who took Diplomacy course. They were divided into groups, consisted of 3 students for each group, and they represented one of the states members of the security council of the United Nations. The agenda of the session was about ?The Afghanistan and Pakistan Conflict on the Durand Line?, with continuous presence of US troops in Duran Line and Attack on Al Qaeda as the topic area. Every student who represented those states had to comprehend the case and should not turn to defend other countries beside their represented countries.

Thing that was interesting about this simulation, the participants were not only assessed by their argumentation, but also assessed by their appearance in representing their country. ?Today we give extra point for their appearance, such as their costume to present their country, and accessories?, said Gina as one of the team teaching member of Diplomacy course. ?It aims to encourage the participants to prepare their presentation well. We also give extra point for the participant with best costume,? Gina added.

This kind of final test was actually suggested by the students. The students looked more confident with those costumes and accessories. For the previous years, costume and accessories did not become important things. This kind of test has been practiced since 2005, and continued in 2007.

Specifically for this subject, the introductory language for test and the lesson are English. Even though the test was held in a group, but activity of each member was still being concerned. The team teaching members carefully paid attention to the simulation. Some of the points of assessment were the congruity between the presented material and the topic area, comprehension about the country they represented, students? involvement in the group, and their appearance. Best Delegation, Best Position Paper, Best Outfit, and Best Speech were announced at the end of the session. These participants would get extra point for their final test score. (rh)
