Many university graduates have not decided their career path. Others do not know how to submit good application to companies. To respond the needs of the students regarding their future career, UPH Career Development Center regularly holds various events, such as seminars, workshops, and on-campus recruitment.

“We invited leading companies who care about human resources development, innovation, and creativity to give seminar and workshop. Therefore, students may know what it is like in the real work life,” said Merlinda Jusak, Head of UPH Career Center.

On Monday, September 17, 2012, UPH Career Center in cooperation with Astra Internasional held a seminar entitled “Today’s World of Working Condition and Self Preparation to Enter It.” This one-day seminar was held at MYC Multipurpose Room, UPH and attended by 120 students from various deparments with speaker Putri Larassitri, HC Analyst, PT. Astra Internasional.

“The seminar is opened to students from all majors and batch so that the students will be aware of the industry,” mentioned Merlinda. This also became the goal of PT Astra Internasional in their program “55.000 Hours Astra Sharing Knowlegde,” it is for the the soon-to-be graduates to understand as early as possible the industry so that they could prepare themselves early.

“Link and match” is the most effective activity to prepare graduates to be quickly admitted in industry. Therefore, according to Putri, someone must acknowledge the competence needed in the vacancy. This would relate to the applicants’ Curriculum Vitae (CV). The company might recognize the applicants, first from their CVs. Therefore, CV had to be smartly written. It is good to mention all activities and achievements related to the job vacancy.

In this seminar, the speaker gave tips in competing when applying a job. The participants enthusiastically asked how to make a good CV, what is the competence most needed by the company, and how to look for a job that is matched with passion.

Responding the questions, there were two tips given. The first one, actively involved in various activities, inside and outside the campus. It is better to take part in organization. “Campus life does not only mean studying in class because good GPA is not enough. What differentiates one applicant with another is their activities, organizational experience, and non-academic achievements. People who actively involved in organizations have the ability to plan and organize. We prefer human resources with those abilities to the ones who only have good grades,” said Putri.

Therefore, Putri strongly encouraged the students to get involve in campus activities. It is better if they can get involve in activities outside the campus, nationally and internationally. By taking part in organizations or competitions, we could measure our competence.

The second tips was to pick a job that fits our passion. “It would be fun to do a job that fits to our passion. Passion does not only mean fit to our interest, but something that we will not get tired of,” she added.

Passion might be figured out later but it is better to prepare it as soon as possible. “Smart people are the ones who can turn their passion into their career,” she stated. (rh)
