This biggest olympic for medical school was held for the first time in Indonesia. This time, it took place in Faculty of Medicine Universitas Brawijaya, Malang on July 13-17, 2012.

Corrya Quando Yahya and Priscilia Pratami Intan were the students from UPH batch 2009 who succesfully took home the gold medal. Both won against 27 teams coming from 27 universities. Three steps in the competitions included 100 multiple choice questions, OSCE, and SOOCA (Student’s Objective Oral Case Analysis).

Despite this was the first competitions for both students, Corry and Priscilia did an incredible job. Corry said that the winning was a result of hard work with her partner, Priscilia and the support of their academic counselor. “Our lecturers did not only support us by preparing us academically but also mentally. They were willing to spare their time frequently to help us with academic materials, support, and facilitate us patiently. It built our strength,” Priscilia stated.

UPH learning system is based on competency based curriculum that makes the learning process more applicative. It is also supported with the best learning facility. “Our curriculum is better as the faculty has the spirit and the openmindness to criticism and suggestion to always improve the curriculum,” said Priscilia.

The openmindness to keep improving is also proven by supporting the students to join competitions. UPH Faculty of Medicine selects the participants based on GPA and character. “The first student who applies for the competition shows that they are serious and determined. One will also be assesed from his character, how he interacts with friends and lecturers also how he responds to school projects. A good character is important to create a solid team where one can support the other teammates. Furthermore, of course GPA. However this is not the main criteria although GPA could give a general assesment on how a person commits to finish a task,” explained Corry, one of the participants and the coordinator of UPH Faculty of Medicine for IMO 2012.

In this competition, the team sent 10 students within 5 teams to compete in 5 categories.
