“When I turned 20, I had a dream to be financially free before I turn 30. One of the triggers was my student loan in Singapore had almost reached S$ 40 thousand in 1998,” told Merry about her story in the beginning of the seminar.

In the seminar at UPH, Merry Riana told about her struggle to continue study because of financial limitation. She told that at that time her parents must take loan from the Singapore government in order to get Merry finish her study at Nanyang Technological University.

“With that loan and limited allowance, only S$ 10 for one week, I must work to get extra allowance,” she said.

With random jobs, she started her success story. She decided to start and focus on her own business which finally led to S$ 1 million income in just 4 years after she graduated when she turned 26. It did not stop there as she wrote her first motivational book in 2007 entitled “A Gift from A Friend” that made her best seller author in Singapore. The book was finally translated in a few languages including Bahasa.

“In my opinion, success is a process. It’s not a destination but, it’s a journey. A process where I have to keep growing in terms of finances, spiritual, intellectual, social, and many more. As I grew, I also did not forget to share to all people surrounding me,” she said.

The success achieved by this 32-year-old woman has made her the first Asian motivator and she continued to inspire people, especially people from her own country Indonesia.

“Success is a never ending process. In my life there is always a goal and there is always a dream. My dream when I was 30 was to give positive impact throughout the books, seminars, positive quotes, tweets, and many more in the life of one million people, especially Indonesians. It?s not that I?m telling what to do, but I?m just sharing with you what I?ve done. Hopefully the dreams will come true,” she told.

The seminar held on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 has inspired approximately 400 participants, both students from UPH and outside UPH. Merry said that she was happy to share this session with UPH students. “This is my first time giving a seminar to UPH students. The campus really reminds me of my campus at NTU Singapore. It really looks like Singapore with all the gardens, very beautiful,” she praised.

At the end of the seminar, Merry said that a life was a justified struggle, a must-face challenge, a Lord’s blessing that we must be grateful. Whatever our dreams were, believe that it would come true. Not because of coincidence, not because of fate, is it because we believe that we could. What we did today was important for the future.

“Life is a struggle and a struggle needs sacrifice. A sacrifice needs patience and patience needs faith. Believe that you can, believe that God will always be with you. If Merry Riana can do it, then you can too!” she motivated many audiences at the end of the seminar. (tna)
