The data from Kepolisian Republik Indonesia showed that the number of accident in teenagers tend to raise each years. In 2011, it raised 3.910 cases up to 19.389 cases. On 15-29 years old kids, the death rates caused by traffic accidents are raising. Those kids are mostly have not got their driving license yet, but their parents let them to drive. The others that have got their license are got into traffic accidents because of their negligence. As a response to these facts, Students Organization and Activities (SOA) UPH together with ?Honda Brio Goes to Campus? held a Safety Riding Campaign on the lobby of D Building, Universitas Pelita Harapan.
Safety Riding Campaign is an annual event of SOA UPH to raise students? awareness to drive safely. This year, Safety Riding Campaign held on October 1, 2012, inviting one of the best racer in Indonesia, Aswin Bahar, to share his knowledge. Aswin studied in Jim Russel Racing School, Britain and also in Safety Riding School, Okinawa, Japan.
In his sharing, Aswin highlighted the importance to know the right techniques to drive. ?Everyone can learn and really need to learn,? he said. He also said that actually everyone can drive, but not everyone drive with the right techniques. That fact pushed Aswin to teach the right techniques to drive for kids and teenagers. One of the techniques he shared is how to control the car if all of the sudden, one of the tires explode. The driver should not hit the brake, keep driving calmly, and slowly maneuver the car to the side of the road. The driver should not be panic or giving up. ?As long as the wheel is in our control, we are in charge to control the car,? he said, assuring the audience.
They are also providing some Honda Brio so that the students can practice the techniques and at the same time doing the test drive. Honda Brio is providing the feature that support the safety driving. Most small car has no air bag feature, but Honda Brio has it.
World Health Organization (WHO) just launched a data showing that every 4 hours, at least 4 kids killed by traffic accidents. UPH is one of the campus that care about the conditions of Indonesia?s young generation. UPH is still trying to raise the students? awareness to drive safely. This thing is important because most UPH students are using private car as their transportation to campus. (jjs)
