Research Dissemination: ?The Effect of Lenses with the Use of Scheimpflug Principle to SLR Type Camera?

…this research? aim is to find the principle in analog photography so that it could be applied to the digital field by using Scheimpflug principle.

Ernest Irwandi, the researcher, was explaining the lens working process

School of Design UPH held a seminar and workshop entitiled ?Optics and Photography? that lasted for two days, from May 1 to May 2, 2013 located at MYC Multipurpose Room, UPH. The two-day seminar opened with the research dissemination from the lecturers of UPH Faculty of Visual Communication Design and on the next day, the seminar closed with the seminar featuring Dr. Masahiro Oikawa, an expertise in the optical field from Japan.

In the first session of the Optic and Photograph seminar, the presented theme was about the dissemination of scientific research by two lecturers of Faculty of Design, Ernest Irwandi, S.Sn and his colleague J. Baptista Anton, S.Sn., M.I.Kom. The theme of their research was ?Pengaruh Rangkaian Lensa Dengan Menggunakan Prinsip Scheimpflug Pada Kamera Tipe SLR?(The Effect of Lenses with the Use of Scheimpflug Principle to SLR Type Camera). During the interview, Ernest described this research? aim is to find the principle in analog photography so that it could be applied to the digital field by using Scheimpflug principle. The research was divided into two stages. The first stage involved the usage of digital camera and then the second stage would be applied to the camera video.

Ernest presented the View Camera

The first stage of the Lens Research with the use of Scheimpflug Principle took more than 1 year that started from the beginning of 2012 until April 2013. Ernest Irwandi said, ?This research is based on various variables, firs, to restore the View Camera?s functions which still use roll film with a big dimension. UPH already had that camera since 1998 where its original function was only used as props. Then we though to restore the maximal functions by applying and combining the functions and principles of analog lenses with principles of digital camera lenses. Interestingly, the principles from the two lenses, the digital and the analog, could be actually incorporated to create another form of creativity. The results were different with the pictures that were taken with a digital camera that uses lenses in general?.

?The other variable is the lens weaknesses that could be utilized as the source for creativity. For example, distortion, or commonly named abrasion, which always considered as a weakness could be used and resulted in an interesting picture. The usages of convex and concave lenses usually create abrasion of purple and blue colored line at the objects? edge, this result is usually named chromatic abrasion. To overcome the chromatic abrasion, we tried to utilize the lens tablet and the result, that weakness was able to be reduced,? explained Ernest Irwandi.
Through this research, Ernest Irwandi and Baptista Anton hoped that the students could do more experiment in the photography and video. They also hoped that this research could be useful for Cinematography Department that will open later in UPH, inspiring students? projects and assignments, as well as developing this research further.
