After World War II, United States is undeniably known as one of the biggest countries in the world and US can affect the world in every aspect – economy, politics, or military for more than 50 years. This condition led the US to have cooperation agreements with many countries, including Indonesia. As a big country, US wants to embed their influence in each region, including Asia Pacific. In order to deal with this situation, what should students, faculty members, and other people know about US-Indonesia partnership? How this partnership can benefit Indonesia? What are goals of the US and Indonesia from this partnership? To answer these questions, UPH held a seminar ?U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership?.
This seminar presented by U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia,?Scot Marciel?and moderated by?John Riady,?UPH?s Executive Dean of Business School, Law School and School of Government and Global Affairs.In this opportunity, Tangerang Mayor, Mr. Wahidin Halim Iskandar also joined the event. This seminar held at UPH Hope Building, and attended by more than 200 people. The audiences came from various backgrounds, such as students from UPH Undergraduate and Graduate program, students from SPH and UPH College, media, and officials from US Embassy in Jakarta and government officials from Tangerang.
Scot Marciel stated that Asia is important for US because of its large population, rapid economic growth and fast dynamic. Scot also stated that for now there are so many global challenges in the world such as terrorism, global warming, epidemic, poverty, and crisis of justice. To solve these problems, a country should work together with other countries. Thus United States wants to cooperate more with Indonesia as a part of US strategy to rebalance their position in this region. Comprehensive partnership basically focuses on how to build and improve a bilateral cooperation. Scot also emphasized that the cooperation should not be limited to security, but also in diplomacy and education. (of)
