To be true educators can only be accomplished because of God?s calling. However, calling is still an unfamiliar concept in this world. Most of work and do activities because of one?s desire.
Education in UPH continuously emphasize about the concept of talent and calling where students are being taught to keep pursuing their greatest talent that God has given to every one of them. This year, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) graduated 412 Teachers College students (11/2). These graduates answer their calling to give their commitment for students who need ? such as in the Eastern Indonesia ? a good education.
UPH Founder James Riady said that students ? and also parents ? should understand the concept of callings. ?Do not coerce your children to pursue and commit things that are not in their greatest talents,? said James, advising parents of the graduates. Deep dissatisfaction and inability to compete may emerge if parents coerce their children to do things that are not of their greatest talents ?I am sure that there will be a lot of problems bound to happen,? James added.
?But if you pursue the greatest talent without any calling, then you are no better than a money-making machine that works everyday only for the purpose of yielding money. You will not have any certain purposes; the true substance in a life. So, you also have to pursue your calling,? said James, pointing out the risk of pursuing talent without calling to the graduates. Only those who know and understand God can understand the concept of calling.
For example, Putu ? graduated from Teachers College ? has found her calling to do ministry as a teacher at Mamit, Papua. Her talent in teaching is used to guide and build a young generation at the rural region of Papua. Putu said this not about her desire, but it is because of God?s plan and God has given her a feeling of longing in her heart to serve at Mamit. Just like what James Riady had said, ?If it is not because of God?s calling to serve, then no one will ever want to go to Mamit.?
Therefore, UPH has the best education program, which is Teachers College, that can help students to find their callings in teaching and character building talents. The graduates of this year Teachers College will have their second degree from UPH while the first degree had been given by Corban University. (ym)
