Pre-Medical Students of Biola University Visited UPH Faculty of Medicine (FM) on 10 to 20 June 2014. This visit was intended to see and study the health care and medical activities in Indonesia, to be specific in Siloam hospital. The guests of Biola University were Dr. Harvey Havoonjian (Director of Health Professions Advising and Associate Professor Dept. Biological Sciences) and 8 students, Daniel M. Strauss, Andrew J. Daedler, Kyle A. Solano, Grant J. Peacock, Emily G. Kincaid, Thalia Quezada, Raven S. Worthy, and Gia M. Hernandez.

The students were divided into four small groups wich take turn to visit Siloam Hospital (the pharmacy, laboratory, front desk, OPD Surgery and Radiology). These eight students were able to participate in every part of the activity. They have looked around the hospital and held discussion with Siloam Hospital doctors who are the experts in their field. Besides, they also follow the lecture considering ?National Health Issues in Indonesia?, ?Global Health Issues?, ?Siloam Health Care?, and ?Health System in Indonesia? brought by Siloam doctors, Dr. Shirlet, Dr. Jyothi and Dr. Anang Prayudi

This was nothing new for the eight students. They were very keen and enthusiastic to follow each program. Here are some impressions from Biola University students:

?In America, we undergo a 4-years study period. First, we have to follow the college program for two years, then we continue to university for two years. Along this time, we as the Pre-Medical students still learn science as a whole. It is inedeed, the first time for all of us to learn directly how things work in hospital and to see the whole medical activities here.?

Andrew

?One of the interesting thing that I learned here, is about how to understand Hemodialisa deeper. In university I have learned the matter theoritically, but this is the first time for me to witness how this hemodialisa work?

Kyle

?I am very grateful to be able to study science and medicine outside my country. I obtain new experiences, especially regarding health issues in Indonesia and how docotrs work in Indonesia. The culture differences between Indonesia and America might bring a slight difference in the health care system, but there are no big differences of the medical science. So this, would actually enrich my prior knowledge as a Pre-Medical student and prepared me to enganged into the profesional world later.? (ca/seli)
