The biggest annual event from UPH School of Design, Design Expo 2014 was held once again on June 16-21, 2014 with ?Legacy? as the theme. Elya Kurniawan Wibowo, dean of UPH SoD, explained the theme ?Legacy?. She implies that the design is a legacy of creative people to the community. This legacy is a contribution to the community for a better future. This is related to a sustainable design, where each design that has been made should have accountable sustainability so it would not damage the environment. Therefore, a series of event held in the Design Expo was to bring students and community with inspirational design actors that were successful and responsible towards the environment. The series of events in the Design Expo 2014 consists of a talk show with alumni and industry leaders, workshops, competitions and academic works exhibition.

One of the seminar held in Design Expo 2014 is the one entitled ?Sustainale Paper? brought by Suzuki Koji (YUPO Corporation Japan) and Tulus Pasaribu (Surya Palace Jaya). This seminar, followed by more than 100 participants, explained about contribution towards sustainable design (Sustainable Paper).

Tulus Pasaribu opened the seminar with a background of the emergence of synthetic paper in Japan. This synthetic paper began to develop since 1970 in Japan. At that time, the availability of oil in the world is high. However, there are concerns from the Japanese people, about the availability of natural resources that have been continuously used by humans and eventually will diminish over time. The Japanese people then look for ways to maintain its sustainability. “If we keep to relying on wood as raw material for paper, it will not be possible. Because one day, the availabilty of wood will eventually decrease. Therefore, Japanese people innovate by using raw materials such as oil or plastic. From here we can see that the raw material is usually considered destructive for the nature but in reality it can be utilized as something that helps the world to maintain natural preservation”, explained Tulus.

Subsequently, Suzuki Koji had a chance to introduce synthetic paper from YUPO. He gave a demonstration on the advantages of YUPO Synthetic Paper. One of the participants was challenged to rip YUPO?s synthetic paper with all his might, and it turns out that it can?t be torn. Manufactured using modern technology and having plastic as its raw material, the YUPO synthetic paper turned out to be very strong, anti-tear and having a surface that still can be written with a pencil or pen. ?YUPO Synthetic Paper used a material which is quite expensive. But, because it was produced with unique technology, it reduces the production process and of course the cost of production. This synthetic paper is strong and waterproof, it can be applied to just about anything. For product labelling, maps, paperbag and many more. But the most important is that this is an eco-friendly paper,? explained Suzuki Koji.

At the end of session, it was emphasized once more that when a designer decides to use YUPO product, then the designer has contributed to the sustainable design, because this synthetic paper has advantages, such as not easily damaged and very strong. Thus, this synthetic paper will not be wasted and would quickly reduce paper waste in the world.

In addition to the seminar on ?Sustainable Paper?, there are other seminar such as seminar on ?Design Authorship? from Desain Grafis Indonesia (DGI Press); seminar ?Mission Zero: Our Promise to Eliminate Any Negative Impact Our Company May Have on the Environment by Year 2020? by Interface; Seminar on Product Design by Accupunto and Ivan Chrsitanto; Seminar on Architecture by three architectural experts and an seminar on animation by Enspire Studio.

There was also competition from the four majors in collaboration with the famous design companies such as Digital Pubishing who collaborated with Media Indonesia, Design Product competition who collaborated with Vie for Living, Design Interior competition who collaborated with SANDIMAS Granite and Sanitary, and Rhizome Architecture who collaborated with Aboday. Design Expo 2014 also showcased the work of students from all four majors of UPH SoD in the lobby of Building B and the Plaza of Building D, there was also DKV Paper Installation titled ?Metamorphose? at Pelita Gallery.
