They had the opportunity to share their opinions about the following questions that will be asked by the moderator, Gracia S. Ugu, lecturer of Dual-Degree International Executive MBA Program.

The first question is about their definition of working?

This is your first day. Even it seems so far ahead , but it?s important question. You need to think it over ?Why I want to be a lawyer, or why I want to be a businessman??. I guarantee that your answer will be because my parent tell me so. Once upon a time, lawyer is a noble proffesion. People respected you. Nowadays, lawyer is almost like a joke. People have so much skepticism toward lawyer. As a lawyer we take role as an architect of our society. We suppose to have the vision of how the society should formed .But, now most of the lawyers only serve people with the cases they had interest on. They don?t have any vision, they only have ?makalah kasus?. It will be a downfall of this profession. For me, I believe to solve this condition is to have legal education. Not only to be smart lawyers but, also to understand their ?higher? calling. So, you have the quality to be that different kind of lawyers.

John Riady

Prof. Bintan R. Saragih

I have see the definition of working from 2 sides. The first time I enter Universitas Indonesia, my main goal is to make my students to achieve great grades and graduate with the best mark. But, after i enter Universitas Pelita Harapan, my perspective of working is different. Now, not only to make them achieve the best, and to be the best lawyers, I want them to be a lawyer that have moral values in their lives. That?s what we expect from you. Not only to learn about law but, you also had to learn all the subjects in liberal arts. I understand you get lazy the first time you study it, because you might think it?s useless but, after a few years you will understand the benefit of studying liberal arts. You will understand law major as a whole.
For me it?s too early for you think about working. Now, i prever you to think about the reason why you choose UPH to have higher knowledge. You need to understand the education quality that you have here. UPH is different from other universities because we treat the students as the whole person. We pay attention to their spiritual, physical health, and social lives. UPH vision is unique. We have based our education with hollistic perspectives. More importantly, we understand each individual of the students. We do not expect you to get perfect mark because each person has different capability. Not all students will get ten. Maybe some will get only two. But, we will try to make each of that talent to be the best or even doubled.

Prof. Aleksius Jemadu

I remember I was reading some article that John had shared me. It?s about a parents that had a doubt of having their children to enter university. I was even surprised after i read it because even in developed countries, people still underestimate the power of education. Basically entering the campus world is not about remembering all the theories. It depend on each individual how they want to use it or what job they would apply to. In fact, in UPH you will learn to grow positive character for yourself. Education is not about remembering but to be obidient and discipline. You need to know that you will be a graduates that are different from other university because you will graduate with values that are based from UPH vision and mission which are true knowledge, faith in Christ, and Godly character.

The second question is about how they would motivate the students to sustain and focus in their study?

I agree with what Bintar said. I just want to add a few points. Sometimes i saw my students are energetic at first, but they are so lazy after several years. I want to take a reflection from Robin Williams. Everyone knows him, and maybe alot of people want to be him. But, I wonder why he decided to take his own life eventhough he has everything that will bring happiness to most people. Maybe, I?m thinking that there are a difference on just working and to work based on their calling. I believe with your life background you will get a job easily but, in UPH it?s more than that. It?s about to convey a message to the students to do their job based on their calling. I?m sure without a calling, eventhough they have reach a successful life they might feel it?s not enough and will find an emptiness in their lives. I wish in this 3 year of studying, you will not only gain knowledge but find your calling from the divine.

Prof. Bintan R. Saragih

Usually motivation comes from studying hard to achieve the best. But, for me it does not work that way. Studying alone is not enough because our life is beyond that. There are three important point to remember such as studying, socializing, and dating. Don?t only focus yourself in the academic aspect. Liven up a little. Three years are quite a long time to have new experience, and to shape the new better you.

I think motivation is very significant. If our motivation is zero, everything that we will do will also failed. I want to share the meaning of our 5 km marathon on Saturday. Not only to have fun, but to teach ourselves to finish what we started. To fight, not to give up, and to achieve the best. You need to finish the work, like your education and I wish I will see you again here in the next three years. It?s also important love what you choose.

Prof. Aleksius Jemadu

Usually our motivation to graduate is to get the bachelor degree. To be successful and to have better name to show. I remember, after graduate i will always tell them to keep a good name of your own almamater. In fact, it?s actually one basic root of you to keep a good profile of your family. Furthermore, if we can see that God has a plan for everybody. We need to realize that God has a purpose why He put us here. Just believe in God, because God will do the work.

Through this session, the deans and all the unit of UPH faculties wish that the student could open their eyes and use this three years of their education wisely. They warmly welcomed to the students to come to each of them if they need help. ?This is your opportunity to explore more and to become a better person,? said Grace. (priss)
