The role of parents is one of the three pillars that are critical in a child’s education. In order to increase the participation of parents in the education of their children, Business School UPH established Parents Gathering on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. The event was held at the Multi-Purpose Room (MYC) from 17.30- 20:00, and attended by about 50 parents of students. This event featured Dr. Ir. InnocentiusBernarto, MM., M.Si., Sociologist and lecturer at UPH Business Schoolwho presented the main topic of the role of Academic Advisors (PA).
The event was opened by Grace Salim, Business School?s Director of Administration, explaining UPH?slearning system in general. Parents are invited to support children in campus activities associated with the college?stight schedule and the existence ofLiberal Arts, a new course. According to Grace,Liberal Arts is a very important subjectfor knowledge and soft skills enhancements of the graduates. The total compulsorycredits for Liberal Arts are 39 credits and are part of a total of 144 credits that must be taken by students as a graduation requirement. Liberal Arts is consists ofleadership, character development, ethics, religion understanding (theology), world religionclass for non-Christiansand philosophy. UPH is the only private university that applies Liberal Arts, and this is an adoption of overseas? educationwhich affects the quality of its graduates. In this case,UPH seeks to produce graduates who are not only proficient in knowledge but who also have good character and high integrity. Some other important things delivered byGrace were on the faculty?seffort in giving academic assistance for students through PA that has been determined for each student. She also invited parents to constantly monitor the activities of children and tocommunicate intensively to determine their development. Business School UPH also makes the efforts to improve the quality of its graduates, including by conducting surveys for UPH graduates who were involved in the industry in order to get input from the user for the internal academic, in order to improvethe quality of learning. Business School also performed attitudetests using Bloomberg Attitude Test, in order to determine the attitude quality of graduate students objectively. Thus the weaknesses and strengths of UPH graduates are knownand usedas evaluation for improvement. Periodically, management personnels ofBusiness School also hold an informal meeting over breakfast every Friday. On the occasion, students can update information, ask questions or submit a suggestion. Other efforts undertaken byBusiness School is to provide an introduction of the faculty and major to the prospectstudents through highschool business program.

He described the teaching and learning process in Business School by displaying photographs of theclassroom atmosphere, while explaining how the lecturers teach and the process ofcommunication between students and lecturers. This is to explain to the parents so that they will get a sense of an overview of campus activities, the communication between lecturers and students and otherstudent activities on campus. Through this explanation, it is expected that parentswill know their children?s campus activitiesand be able to communicate matters relating to the campus activities with their childrenas well as with the faculty?s academic advisors.
The role of PA, according to Dr. Inno, not only providesan explanation and academic guidance to students but also helpsparents in the form of giving children?s academic report to parents as well as addressing issues related to students. He also reminded parents to encourage children to be active and independent in the learning process.
